US actor Mark Ruffalo has slammed ongoing US support for Israel following the recent deaths of six Israeli captives held by Hamas, including Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, and the fatal shooting of Turkish-American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank.

The Hulk star cited the US government's unwavering support for Israel during the war on Gaza - which has killed at least 40,972 Palestinians - and the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank as proof of its complicity in the deaths of the two Americans.

"If [US President Joe] Biden remained steadfast to American law concerning military aid, his ‘red lines’ and the world outcry, his ability to use American law to leverage a ceasefire, these beautiful, young people would be alive today," Ruffalo continued.

Shoots dead activist

There are less clumsy ways of phrasing that Israel killed someone.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

I was going to say, this might be the worst wording ever. Why would they shoot a dead activist?

[–] [email protected] -1 points 2 months ago

Usually the awkward wording is avoided by not mentioning the victims individually at all. There are too many of them each day. They blur into daily totals .

But here we have a pretty young American. And people will be talking about her for at least a week. And people who write these headlines are out of practice saying just one person was killed.

Just by reordering the words to "shoots activist dead." Done. Copy editor job unlocked.

"Israel shoots dead activist" has to be the dumbest headline ever. What's wrong with clarifying it by saying "Israel murders American activist"?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago

Why would you shoot a dead activist? Seems un-necessary...

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago

Then it becomes antisemitic.

The word order is incorrect English. “Israel shoots dead activist” indicates they shooting was done to a corpse. The correct wording would be “Israel shoots activist dead” meaning that Israel shot a living activist resulting in their death. As far as using the word “murder,” while I agree with it that is a legal concept that journalists avoid when discussing state actions to guard against charges of libel.

Maybe it's a spin on beating a dead horse? It sure feels like it could be... I can't keep track of all the activists, Americans on both sides, as well as aid workers, who have been killed in this senseless conflict. All the while we hear about dipshits calling for the eradication of civilians.

I am so tempted to make my first Lemmy bot that just shitposts a gif of something being slammed every time the word shows up in a headline. Although I’ll need a pretty beefy server because that’s gonna be a looooot of headlines.

I've just been doing it manually every time I see it. It's probably getting old, but then that's the point, innit?
