Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

Following a conversation / thread is a hot mess at the best of times, it's mostly just brain farts, and #people #write #out #things #like #this #as #some #sort #of #shitty #search #engine #optimization #because #EVERYONE #MUST #FIND #MY #BRAIN #FART #AT #ALL #COSTS .

If you have something of substance to say, just blog it or make a post on a proper platform where you can actually make your point without the reader having to put together the worst IKEA jigsaw puzzle known to humans. The technology to edit/update a post has existed forever, so it's stupid to just keep replying to yourself as new information "breaks".

Microblogging is dumb.

Well, I can't say it the opinion is popular or not, it does seem like one that's mixed at least.

I can't say I fully agree, because you chose to call it dumb rather than any other descriptor in the title and later on the body, but don't support that label very well in the body of the post. It kinda makes it difficult to accept it as more than a rant, which is not really the same thing as an unpopular opinion, even when the rant is unpopular as well.

My points of digression with the concept you're presenting are that microblogging itself isn't the same as hashtag abuse; and that using the platforms poorly isn't the same as the platform itself being bad.

However, microblogging absolutely does seem to draw a lot of people that use it poorly and abuse hashtags. So, while the underlying platforms aren't "dumb", they sure as hell look it.

I would offer the counter argument that it isn't microblogging that's dumb, it's people; but microblogging shows the dumbness easier than other formats.

Fair enough, yeah. It's kinda like saying "this mirror is ugly"

Yeah, maybe knock it the fuck off with the gatekeeping bullshit. I've seen similar from you in other posts in this community. This is your first, final, and only warning.

That's 846.5 million people who are on some form of micro-blogging platform; almost a billion people plus or minus bots.

We both know that this audience is not the same as the one at those places. Still, point taken, my objection here was a bit weak.

I just ran over the last 20 posts. I'd say about 4 or 5 are obviously popular opinions (eg. the one on organ donation), a bunch are blah-neutral (eg. the one on space terminology), and only about 4 or 5 are obviously unpopular (artists and AI etc). Actually, a really unpopular opinion was the one I posted - but I just noticed it broke rule #1! You should have deleted it! I'm completely serious.

You think I'm annoying with my "gatekeeping", I get it. And yeah, you saw me doing it in !Showerthoughts, where the mods are AWOL. Eventually I gave up and left.

The reason I do it is that is that I want Lemmy to succeed. That means quality control, which means gatekeeping. It should really be done by the moderator, but in a bunch of communities the mods are completely out to lunch. You are not - so thank you. I know it's a thankless task, as you just proved by telling me to "knock the fuck off", which definitely breaks rule #2 (but I forgive you).

Don't even get me started. People prefer it though, and it's killed forums.

I came here through the #FART hashtag.

Probably the only useful one
