[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago

It's Rastamouse.

I've no idea of it's ever been shown outside the UK. You can probably find it on YouTube or something

Rastamouse is pretty old now

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

well i'm culturally oblivious, which is a function of being old

Rastamouse is for young kids and was first out in 2011, so unless you were a child then or had young kids then, it's fine to not have heard of him

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

it's cool to learn about it now tho. i come from the era of Danger Mouse

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Mickey Mouse, Jerry Mouse, Danger Mouse, Rastamouse, apparently the kids just always love mice

How do you not know of all the bad shit surrounding Rastafarianism?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago

If you dont have contact with something you wont learn about it...

Rastafarians aren’t just hippies with good weed, good music and a spiritual worldview. The religion also includes a lot of misogyny and homophobia (which appears to have come from the Old Testament as translated through British Victorian-era Christianity). That’s assuming one looks at the actual Afro-Caribbean syncretic religion, rather than “rastafarianism” as it’s given by clueless white dudes who like to get high but want to feel spiritual about it.

Thanks for the educational PSA. Sad to see but good to know.

I've been starting to learn some Afro-Latin jazz as part of my piano study, and it's gotten me into listening to reggae as well, and I've really been enjoying it. There were naturually a ton of repeat references to things I knew nothing about. The Wikipedia page on Rastafarianism was enough for me and a Youtube video about the significance of Haile Selassie to the belief system instantly set off a whole bunch of conspiracy theory alarm bells.

I'm not in the market for any religion, but even if I were, I don't think this would be in my top 3. I'll stick with learning piano instead.

Piano is a good religion to have.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago

Not too many situations that would not be improved with some piano!

An Abrahamic religion based around worshipping a hereditary monarch is problematic? Colour me amazed.
