I'm old-naughties internet café crew from around the era of the original Counter Strike through CoD MWF3 and Battlefield 2042. I wouldn't mind reliving the nostalgia of that era, and have more than enough machine to do it now. I have zero tolerance for micro transactions, gatekeeping, or software as a service business models. I have little interest in Steam as anything more than a single banking transaction, and I will only connect to something online that is documented and strait forward when it comes to multiplayer networking stuff.

My networking is about like a locked down corporate connection. I can play something like 0 A.D. that has a few required and documented connections needed for multiplayer, but won't connect to discord when it requires around a dozen raw IP addresses on random ports with no documentation.

Do any of you know of games that fit those requirements and are worth spending money on?

::: spoiler I probably seem annoyingly specific...

...or even paranoid, but I've both downloaded a PDF in the past that wrecked a machine with malware from a 3rd party datasheet on vintage computing hardware, and I find that isolating myself from ads and data mining at this level is best for my mental health with isolation from disability; i.e. it is not just arbitrary pedantism in my mind.

I ask because the casual camaraderie could be good for me while pressure to be a consumer at the expense of my family is harmful. Plus I view subscriptions for anything like software as a criminal skimming scam I am not interested in at all. Hopefully you can understand the specificity, and slight excentricity, even if it seems silly at first. I'm not judging anyone for their practices, trying to make a statement about my standards by comparison, or expect anyone to adopt my practices. I don't think like that at all. I'm curious, exploring what I've assumed is not possible for me, and stating the needed info only. I'm also on Fedora WS, with the NVDK kernel module, and can't change my UEFI secure boot keys in the OEM bootloader, so I can't alter kernel space unless I figure out Keytool to boot into UEFI directly.

Dwarf Fortress

Original ascii game here: https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/

Steam game with graphics here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/975370/Dwarf_Fortress/

They are virtually identical, except that the steam version has pretty pixel art and sound.

Perfect game for double O spies like you x)

Most of the stuff on GoG should fit the bill. You still can use it as a website to shop for a game and get a installer exe for it. Without any additional launcher.

As far as documented network go, I've never seen more than games listing a couple of ports for servers, never anything like ips or actual network protocol descriptions. I guess anything with user hostable dedicated servers should be fine.

Problem is that those old games have very low online population, so I'm not entirely sure how much "casual comraderie" you'll find.

If you want to play modern or even recent games and indulge your locked down metwork desires I recommend getting a secondary PC just for gaming and run a separate vlan to fully separate traffic from your existing setup. There's really no realistic threat vector there barring a state level actor or something equally serious but I'm happy to be corrected.

Take a look at DRM-free games (ex. GOG) and then check their rating on ProtonDB. If you don't want to use Steam, there is Bottles and Heroic Game Launcher. I've tried former and it has a "gaming" profile which will automatically add DXVK and VKD3D for you.

any pc game?

Terraria and deep rock galactic are good starters, but this post sounds insanely paranoid for the wrong reasons. Just because you got infected with malware in the past doesn't mean you need to lock down your internet access. You'll gain nothing from it. All you need is an adblocker (+ something that blocks trackers) and not running suspicious files.

Just because you're connecting to a remote server (like any website ever) doesn't mean you're susceptible to attacks. Ditto for almost any modern video game, there are protections in place so nobody can run code or send you harmful files on your machine.

That is not all, just all that was relevant here. I block both inward and outward because I like to reverse engineer and hack around with stuff where I know my script kiddie nonsense will not accidentally nmap scan the internet. I also like to have the logs on a network so that I know exactly what connections any given device is making. I find it silly that people are alarmed at a person simply locking the front door of their home when they do not mind checking to see who is going in and out. It only takes a couple of years and there are very few extra addresses that need to be added. Anyone only accesses a few hundred addresses anyways. Ad block is just the lazy version of a whitelist and is a compromise for what best fits most people. I never see things like captchas and I prefer to know what websites break and why. It informs me about their systems and structure. There are many times I learn that they are not something I am interested in connecting to in the first place. I can modify my whitelist easily from my logs and it is not bothersome to me at all. I find it interesting how many people seem to take issue with a person willing to remain aware of the world that surrounds them. I find such detail interesting, educational, and useful. You must have a vested interest in some aspect of the micro services internet if you find such behavior off putting. How do you think Ad Block lists are created. It is based on the dropped connection logs of someone like myself. I suppose they were just paranoid too. I have several reasons why it is beneficial for me. I'm not really worried about others as much as I am just being responsible. If a curious desire for awareness of the the details that surround me is somehow offensive or off putting I apologize. I find it is a catalyst for learning and contextualizing information in several areas of personal interest and plugs some holes in my ignorance.

I'm not sure if I understand your intentions.

Proton is typically used through steam, but steam isn't going to fly?

Is it being a proton enabled game matter?

L4D2 is still popular, esp on Linux but needs steam.

Beyond All Reason is a foss RTS, similar to StarCraft.

Cataclysm CDDA is a fantastic foss survival RPG. (Single Player)

I just spent all afternoon and evening trying to figure out Cataclysm CDDA. After not doing anything meaningful for hours, I drove a car into a lake and was mediately attacked by a couple of rodents and died with a kill to death ratio of 1:0. Thanks.

It was nothing like what I asked for, but exactly what I needed to push me back into a FreeCAD project tomorrow.

Yeah my first runs didn't even go that well.

I've been watching people play it on YouTube to get better ideas.

How did your project go today?

Looking for a CS/CoD level experience. Steam might be okay, but I haven't tried it and am skeptical of anything marketing oriented. I really don't want to see ads or hype of any kind. I'd much rather ask around and go in search of my options when I feel compelled. In other words, I'm aware of my susceptibility to suggestive marketing and am not okay with others manipulating me through that mechanism so I avoid it all together. I will not enter the space at all unless those terms can be met.

I was just skimming a fedora mag post on gaming and it mentions that Steam packages Proton but there are community maintained versions with more advanced features than are possible on the Steam Deck; the most popular being Proton Glorious Eggroll.

Xonotic was one I played some. It has a different hectic vibe that is not really in that CS/CoD space I liked though. I like to feel like I have a measure of control and not in a situation where reckless speed has an advantage.

You can disable the news pop up that opens with steam, and it opens to your library, not the store page.

The only "hype" it'll show you then are the news on the library pages for the games you own.

I don’t think there are online multiplayer games like CoD or CS that don’t require a platform like steam or good old games to buy, download, and run. I’m not actually sure what you’re trying to do, but if avoiding marketing is your goal I recommend you run steam and change the default page it opens to to be the library where your games are and not the store
