That spare is not even proper lip service

my 18tb exos drive acting as a backup for my other 18tb exos drive is looking at you with disappointment right now.

you forgot my other 18tb exos drive which is also looking at you in displeasure due to the fact that you do not have a proper backup of your data.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

(but for real though, I do have good backups. restic is the shit)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

oh good, this one is mirrored, perfect.

Yeah i have some very manual backups setup, rsync and task scripting go brrr.

I don't need anything more complicated in my life frankly.

I started using Pushover to alert me about my backups so I get one of these daily:

Wasn’t too hard and only had to do it once.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

it's a systemd unit on my side, so i've got logging and potential to implement reporting if i desired, but frankly it's not worth the effort, i just check to see if the drives have roughly the same data on them every so often, because rsync is handling the rest for me, as well as systemd.

I should probably set up proper smart reporting, but i'm lazy and don't want to setup and email server lol.

I used to send email alerts but this just uses Pushover which is just an API call. Super easy.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago

i've considered setting it up, but i don't think smartd supports pushover so meh.

Is data storage a car for guys with micropenis?

I'm pretty sure that spare tire is only there for the joke. With off roading tires that large they are almost definitely bead lock tires which can be ran at very low PSI without risk of the tire departing the rim. On top of that the tread is much thicker meaning punctures have to go deeper before they cause problems and most of the time came be fixed by simple plugs.

Not to mention the logistics of changing a spare on a tire of that size. A bottle jack is completely out of the question and you wouldn't be able to use a farm jack safety with the body that high. Even if you could how are you going to get that wheel onto the studs when it weighs over 300Lb?

Whoever drives that vehicle is definitely a piece of shit.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago

im sure that thing regularly makes it on to the highway.

Definitely not moving any faster than 20mph with those wheels and suspension setup. Not to mention it would probably topple at about 15mph.

Something tells me it's not a daily driver...

People are allowed to have toys.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago

Just owning it says enough about one's personality for me to pass judgement. Same as people who wear camo, people who open-carry, and people who have a Trump sticker on their car.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

People's right to their own personal joys ends at everyone else's right to safety and not being killed on the road (especially as a pedestrian, like you wouldn't be able to see shit in this thing).

Drive it only on private property and transport it in suitable truck? Fine

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Well yeah but something like this shouldn't be on a public road, the visibility would be terrible and it would be so easy to run over people or animals or small vehicles

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

You should certainly drive with more caution than a typical vehicle; but you've still got to get fuel and travel between storage and wherever you're having fun.

A trailer + a vehicle to tow it isn't always available/practical.

Point is, it's likely not on public roads often or very long. It's not like it would be out getting groceries and picking up the kids from school every day.

Tbh, regarding visibility; it doesn't seem any worse than a semi truck. Probably has better stopping power too.

"Let me my freedom"

[–] [email protected] -1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The driver is a POS and people are allowed to have toys. There is no conflict between those positions.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Except in this case, the driver is being called a POS simply for owning a toy and legally driving it down the road.

I could understand if he was actually engaged in some assholery like taking up multiple lanes... But he's fine.

The Venn Diagram of people who drive obnoxious gas-wasting vehicles like that and people who are assholes is a circle

[–] [email protected] 30 points 5 months ago (1 children)

To a sensible person it wouldn't be a daily driver. I've seen some people who are not sensible on my daily commute.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Sure, there are definitely some assholes out there; but all we've got here is this picture.

This does not show him being an asshole in anyway; dudes just existing alongside his toy. What's wrong with that?

A sensible person wouldn't judge a stranger based on the actions of others.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

I'm not saying I know this person is an asshole because they drive a large, obnoxious vehicle every day. I'm saying I see people who drive large, obnoxious vehicles on a daily basis and as such it wouldn't surprise me if this person also drove this large, obnoxious vehicle on a daily basis because I've seen others do it. It's not outside the realm of possibility that this person does use this as more than a "toy" just as much as it's possible that this is the only time it was ever on-road.

If this person drives this vehicle regularly in relatively urban areas (or really much anywhere except mostly on empty roads or off road) then I'd be disappointed and frustrated that their toy is something that has been modified in a way that makes it larger and more dangerous to both other drivers and pedestrians. That's not to say I think they're doing that specifically to be more dangerous to everyone else, but the net effect is still the same. Their modifications have made it harder to see others close to the car, made it easier for others to go under the vehicle in the event of an accident, and made it more likely to tumble in a crash.

That all being said, my experience with the type of people who install modifications like this to their vehicles would suggest they're an asshole who's either apathetic to the danger they cause others or like these modifications specifically because it pisses people off. Just as you said I don't know from this single photo whether this person fits that mold and I'm not going to pretend I do, but I'm also not going to give them the benefit of the doubt.

You may feel comfortable introducing the possibility and almost insisting that their vehicle is a toy, but personally I'm against calling almost any car or truck a "toy", much less one that has wheels that look taller than many people.

My backups are a 2TB and a 5TB, but my normal data is on a 256GB XD

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Oh it hurts real bad

[–] [email protected] 27 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The tire doesn't have to be perfect that's why it's a spare. I'm sure it'll be fine

Like this but with the spare wheel instead of a no wheel
