I've been told that I need to stop this eclipse and I do not have the authority to do that. So yes, people are really concerned. But we're just trying to prepare them.

Everyone watch out for crazies at any gatherings. Crazy Americans are generally armed.

Hey all, yes, I know the article is trash and the headline clickbait-y, but it's still the actual headline, and it's a real (if disappointing) news site.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

fair enough

i can’t wait to see post flairs on lemmy. a simple [misleading headline] goes so far.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 7 months ago (2 children)

I don't have the authority to do that

OK, so it's the governor we need

[–] [email protected] 3 points 7 months ago

This might need to go all the way to the top.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

Maybe he should get a little squidy worm in his head, ala BG3.

[–] [email protected] 94 points 7 months ago (2 children)

misleading headline, and it’s not even close.

“residents beg mayor”

no they didn’t. the article doesn’t cite one singular instance of a resident asking the mayor to stop the eclipse. what it does cite is an off hand, likely facetious/joke comment by said mayor in relation to a bridge that is under construction.

of course, this fact didn’t stop the author from running with this absolute lie, the media entity from publishing the deception, and most of the comments here are falling for the perversion of truth and are clowning on and smearing an entire township.

pardon me if this comment is overly serious. i get this is a satire-of-satire community but holy smokes we need to have better standards for our media. if they can get away with this white lie, imagine what they do every other day when lives are on the line.

Oh we do know what happens, it's all over Lemmy. Lies and twisted truths people believe because it lines up with their agenda.

Welcome to the wonderful world of neoliberalism. The article was written to generate ad impressions, as the majority of articles now are. Being fair and honest in them simply isn't as profitable, so its an afterthought. You can't even pay for journalists with spines because there will always be a greasy manager at the top, saying "but what if we charged a subscription and stuffed clickbait full of ads?".

A couple of years more of AI development and media -- both social and traditional -- will be a write off.

Stopping the eclipse to own the libs

I’m voting for Canute as his successor

[–] [email protected] 33 points 7 months ago

He should say it's cancelled and then when it happens he should blame the Republicans.

Having seen a solar eclipse back in 2017, I can say it was truly an spectacle. But I don't see traveling anywhere just to see another one - I mean it's interesting, but it lasts maybe two minutes and then it's over and back to normal. And I don't see spending all that money when you can get the best view of it watching news coverage on TV.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 7 months ago

I live in the path of totality and the local tourism office is projecting anywhere from 70K to half a million visitors. It's insane! Also, I read Niagara Falls, which is obviously used to seeing a lot of tourists, has nevertheless declared a preemptive state of emergency. And there are advisories to be very careful if you're driving on highways at the time of totality, as there will inevitably be idiots who stop suddenly to gawk and burn out their eyeballs.

Mind you, it could all be a bust given the current weather forecast is for Monday to be cloudy across the whole region. I guess it'll still be cool to see everything go dark for a few minutes though.

Did he not consider nuking the moon?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

Man had always wanted to blow up the moon.

Would you miss it? Would any of you miss it?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 7 months ago

He did... But he does not have the authority.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I don't know why the "journalist" put it this way except to drive traffic. The truth is the main street of that town is under construction and they have been trying for months to warn michiganders from overwhelming this town as it can't handle the influx of travelers. My guess that request was brought up jokenly by a local who is concerned about what is probably going to happen. Their little town overrun by others.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

yes! this type of headline is essentially misinformation???? this is twitter-level mincing of words and an embarrassment to real reporters everywhere.

this type of post should not be allowed, not as real news, and not as c/nottheonion content either. clown behavior.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 months ago

This is some Merlin level superstition... Might as well claim that he is doing in on purpose while it's happening.

Oh man, this incumbent mayor just lost himself the next election. His opponent has an easy platform to run on:

"The incumbent mayor ignored the will of the electorate when they did NOT cancel the eclipse that occurred in April 2024. I can assure you, if elected, I will absolutely listen to the voters and cancel the eclipse if that is the will of the people. So make sure you vote for me and the next eclipse in ...."

checks notes

".... the year 2099, will reflect your wishes. God Bless America!".

[–] [email protected] 88 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (2 children)

I do not have the authority to do that.

You just didn’t pray hard enough!

Edit: on a serious note, I get why the town is panicking. Shit is gonna be crazy for them

[–] [email protected] 48 points 7 months ago (1 children)

My neighborhood is in the path of totality. Someone on Nextdoor is trying to sell use of a spot in their driveway on the day of the eclipse for $700.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (2 children)

Yeah it’s a funny headline but they’re gonna be overrun with tourists and it’s gonna be pretty inconvenient. Unfortunately celestial bodies don’t care. 🤷‍♂️

[–] [email protected] 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Everybody knows celestial bodies only listen to us if we do a proper human sacrifice. Preferably from a tall place.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

And ideally of someone who doesn't fuck.

Its the 21st century, I think we can do better than 'a virgin'.

Anybody here ace and suicidal, maybe looking to spite the literal heavens? You could make a small town very happy. Especially if you're into mountaineering.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Some cultures "offered" free drugs/alcohol for the sacrificed. Might find some takers.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, I think I could get my hands on some stuff.

The Aztecs did not have LSD and E.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

Yeah, and some other stuff, but dude; not the same.

I like mushrooms, but they're not the same thing.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 7 months ago (1 children)

At the end of the article it asks "why come to Luna Pier when you can be in Toledo with get better amenities and the eclipse lasts longer?"

[–] [email protected] 7 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

Because things are too expensive and sold out in ~~Toronto~~ Toledo. They’re not in Luna Pier.

Edit: Geography’s hard….

[–] [email protected] 3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (2 children)

You're off by a few letters or 250+ miles there 😄

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

Ha! I’d say a few letters.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

Toledo: the Great White North.
