I would like to buy an ipod and mod it but it would cost too much.

Are you preparing for a zombie apocalypse?

Anyway, this is the coolest shit I have ever seen today, and maybe the best one here on Lemmy!

How did you get an SSD on it? 30 day battery is really impressive

[–] [email protected] 10 points 10 months ago (4 children)

Is this a kit or custom? Did you 3d print that case?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'm not aware of any 3d print methods or materials that can have that level of transparency, that has to be injection molded.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

In industrial 3D printing you can get this amount of transparency with clearcoat. You can send your model to them and they print and ship it to you for quite cheap. On pcbway it's UTR-8100 Idk if other sites have something similar.

There's a bunch of places selling replacement iPod shells, I think there's probably just one factory that makes them but the iPod mod scene is actually pretty extensive all things considered.

Well that's awesome and I think I've found a new favorite sub.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Would the Rockbox firmware be an improvement?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago

I prefer the aesthetics of the classic iPod OS ☺️

I'm curious about the 30 day battery

[–] [email protected] 9 points 10 months ago

They sell 3000mah replacement batteries vs the original 850mah. I think some solid state drives can save power, but others can use more.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (2 children)

I used a modern 3000mA lithium ion battery which provides about 60 hours of music playback. That’s about 2 hours per day which is much more than I use!

[–] [email protected] 38 points 10 months ago (7 children)

60 hours is two and a half days.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago

Brilliant deduction

Could just be the regular battery not having to supply power to an energy sucking spinning disk.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago (5 children)

I think the SSD uses more power than the original hard drives do. I bought an adapter for the iPod classic to put an SD card in it and there was a few articles about power draw being higher for ssds. I might be misremembering the comparison though, it's been a couple years.

Probably the same original form factor but a new lithium ion

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago

That's as long as some fiancés.

[–] [email protected] 98 points 10 months ago (7 children)

Is that a headphone jack!?

I like headphone jacks.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 10 months ago (1 children)

This needs an interrobang‽

[–] [email protected] 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

You can tell whether I'm posting from my phone or my desktop by whether I use a or a ?!.

(This one was from my desktop despite the interrobang, but that's because I could easily copy-paste yours.)

[–] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Not that easily. I could read theirs, but yours was a box

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Huh, weird. Does it work without the code formatting‽

Jesus, I almost cried when I saw this

[–] [email protected] 12 points 10 months ago (1 children)

damn!

if you don't mind me asking:
how did you create the transparent casing? It looks really great and I'm not sure if it was 3D printed or some other way

[–] [email protected] 14 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Does it still count as “imadeit” if I made it using a hodge podge of other people’s parts? Haha, I ordered the custom shell from eBay ☺️ but it feels very high quality (not 3D printed)

[–] [email protected] 21 points 10 months ago (2 children)

As a 3d printer enthusiast, I object to you implying that 3d printed parts aren't high quality, while acknowledging that you're very correct.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

agreed, sometimes it makes sense to accept that trying to do everything isn't worth it

Rockbox does support FLAC, with iPodLinux I'm not so sure (their ancient http site FAQ promises development via MPD, but that's not a given to have actually happened).

Cool.

Love personal playlists. I use an old phone with SD card to use Bluetooth into my home theater system.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 10 months ago

That's dope!
