I've owned the Java version of the game since before survival mode and don't remember the game ever having a tutorial or pre generated map at all.

Only the console versions had them.
I can't say I've ever heard of this and I started playing back before crouching got added and that was a big deal
The Xbox 360 edition was my introduction to Minecraft, I'm still sad I had to delete my very first world. Some glitch happened and I spawned on the nether roof, no way to kill myself back then.
Why they replaced this perfectly fine console version with a port of the mobile version is still beyond me

You can download the worlds ported to Java, or I'm sure the old MC360Edit would still work, or acquiring a disc and playing it while never connecting to the internet. Discs, while never really changing appearance, were released with varying preloaded Title Updates, so a few are available. It is possible! For me I got the Java ports, I believe from here
