Just a few years ago I watched the movie Bridge of Spies which, based on real events, dramatically portrayed the arbitrary Kafkaesque detention of American student Frederic Pryor by the evil Stasi and the unjust East German state. Well I guess we're the baddies now.

Those of us who remember the days of Bush's stem cell research ban know that they absolutely can stop science. And this shit is so much worse because it's so indiscriminate and cruel. Like literally pro-disease.
They've already set shit back years by ending trials mid-trial, cutting grants for things already underway, not fulfilling existing contracts, etc. and it's just getting started.
We'll be set back decades by the time 4 years is up. And it will take years to recover, if it's even possible.

Disinformation, propaganda, and stupidity
A 2000 year old religion, 250 year old racism, and 20 year old technology.
A bunch of old people that burned the world are afraid of losing their power and wealth, and as climate change becomes the unstoppable force that even they can't stop, their hunger for power accelerates. They brainwashed the low-educated general masses (including brainwashing tech billionaires who have long since forgot what intelligence is and are easy to manipulate) through decades of biased media and promises they'll never keep, all the while building a plan that's mostly just copied from the Nazis, as they themselves aren't really that intelligent, but some are cunning. The cunning and greed begets plans to keep the wealth and power. The plans are so fundamentally wrong and evil, they can never admit the wrong and evil part. They try to hide it behind "Christianity" to sleep at night.
Then, they wait for the correct time.

There's only one problem with your explanation. America didn't copy the Nazis. It was the other way around.

This is what the Republicans have wanted for decades, they've just also been largely lying about not being this craven or extreme for decades.
I come from a right wing household, was raised listening to Rush Limbaugh on the AM radio all the time.
The base has always been like this, the people on top, funding and puppeting the base, have also always been like this.

Trump just gave them all permission to stop pretending they gave a fuck about making sense or pretending to give a shit about any principles.
