My sister recently married into a Central American family and my mother-in-law gave me a bunch of tamales, but I accidentally left them at my Dad's place. I got them today and he admitted he ate one but said the "outer layer was really stringy and tough".

Thing is I'm 90% sure I've had tamales with this man before.

It’s nice to hear these things happen from time to time

Bought a falafel sandwich the other day and kept eating the wrapper because i'm a moron that didn't lower it enough to eat. Got my daily dose of wax paper.

When I was a teen I went to Mexico on a school trip lasted about a month. We stayed in various homes and inns. They brought out a bowl of advocados and I never really seen them before. So I started to peel out the outter hard skin and began to eat it like a fruit, much to the amusement of the host family. "You must realy like those!" Only later did I realise my folly but.....immersion!

I've eaten avos like that before and there is an appeal.

Eating the banana leaf and throwing away the filling to assert my dominance

This is deeply painful, as tamales are my favorite food.

Funny but at least he's not so much of a chud to be unwilling to try things I guess?

He's actually a pretty adventurous eater

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 days ago

I did the same thing when I went to work with my new step dad at a construction site and at lunch they got a bunch of tamales from a food truck. He gave me one and I had a hell of a time trying to chew through that corn husk until he noticed and the whole construction site erupted in laughter with finger pointing and all.

Does he also stab things with his chopsticks because he has arthritis and never learned how to use them

I don't think he's ever used chopsticks.

He did once eat a chunk of wasabi while getting sushi because he thought it was an avocado slice that fell out of his California Roll. Granted that was his first time getting sushi.

Everyone makes that mistake the first time. My child did that at age 3

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 days ago

should do like kids and use a mug grip with the sticks straight down out of the bottom of his fist

It's typically a corn husk but hilarious none the less.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 2 days ago

Its normally a corn husk in north+central mexico but a banana leaf in south mexico+central america

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I've done that, but it's cooked enough to technically be digestible. Fiber gang fiber gang.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 days ago

i was going to say something this; op's dad is going to be very regular and feeling great for the next day or 2.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think banana leaves are used more in the southern parts of Central America.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 days ago

...we used banana leaves in puerto rico; they use corn husks here in texas...
