What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.

For alternatives, there's Wikiloc: https://www.wikiloc.com/

And perhaps GeoVelo: https://geovelo.app/en/

What would be the best alternatives? I love Komoot's maps for planning out MTB rides, and their Garmin app makes it super easy to navigate while riding.

OSMand is no full replacement, but planning GPX tracks on some other app and then transferring that to OSMand should be a breeze. Navigation while riding/hiking/biking/driving on OSMand is pretty feature complete, but I never touched Komoot or used their Garmin app, so I can't make a good comparison.

The buyer "Bending Spoons" also bought Evernote in 2023, for those who remember that downfall.

Time to shine a light on Joplin! It's FOSS, has great support for your own cloud, powerful plugins and is just an all around fine piece of note taking software

+1 for joplin. I recently switched over to it and I'm a big fan.
