If it's upsidedown, it's "50.9"

how long til Canada accepts refugees fleeing the MAGA regime?

I've worked in hospitality, I swear, I'm as good at being polite (and fake polite) as any actual native Canadian, just let me escape the fucking new Nazis please

That would be a risky move I think, we would end up with the Conservatives winning the next election for sure if we did that as they would promise to stop it.

Stop how? Close the borders for people trying to get in AND out?

[–] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

By saying they won't be accepted as refugees anymore and will be turned around if they show up at a crossing.

Not legal, but I could see an underground railroad forming again, for vulnerable people in the U.S. fleeing oppression.

Honestly I would bet money that it has already formed to a degree. With countries this close culturally? Would expect there are several independent groups already. Of course they won't advertise themselves on social media or anywhere public for that matter.

Two weeks hiding in Canada and anyone can ask for refugee status but I'm pretty sure anyone with US citizenship would be refused

That's definitely the case right now, but I'm wondering if that could change if the danger of remaining in the U.S. raised to the point where it couldn't be ignored.

But like I said, there are methods which are illegal but morally defensible, too.

Oh you meant Canadian elections, makes sense.

Yep, we just had an election that the Liberals were lucky to win (new leader, Trump scaring people, Conservative leader seeming to be too much like Trump, conservatives ahead by 20% back in December...) but it's a minority and could be toppled at any time with a vote from the Conservatives and another party so deciding to welcome US residents as refugees when we're in the middle of an immigration crisis would lead to a Conservative government it's 100% sure.

excellent, I have no escape, back to the original plan of smoke a joint and wait to die
