having a non-western anglo saxon name is enough to get deported.

Parts of Spain and all of Portugal are farther to the west than England.

Why are they expecting people to react to emails, anyway? If I got this in my email, I would assume it was just spam. A letter that comes by snail mail would get my attention, though.

Are legal notices regularly sent by email now?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

It's calculated. They want the email to get ignored so that you "commit a crime" by staying in the country, giving them a "legitimate" excuse to deport you.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 minutes ago (1 children)

But I doubt that email can be considered sufficient notice in any court. In fact, now that it has been published, I wouldn't be surprised if it starts getting spammed everywhere just because.

They'll have you out of the country before you can even contact a lawyer or your family, let alone have a court hearing. Their legal justification is just to provide plausible deniability if it ever makes it to the news cycle.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 13 hours ago

No they are not. But these aren't legal notices.

is this not domestic terrorism?

[–] [email protected] 63 points 18 hours ago (4 children)

Are they just emailing these to everyone in the global address list?

doge probably whipped up a garbage AI tool in a hackathon weekend

Judging by how the people in power seem to like badly implementing ideas from cautionary sci-fi books, here's my guess:

They're probably using a point system. If you have an immigration hearing, a million points. If they find your name on a visa (not even necessarily you), that's 20 points. If they find your name on an arrest record, that's 10 points. If they find your name on any immigration court records, that's 10 points

Then they sort the list, send ICE after people with the highest scores, and are slowly emailing their way down the list to anyone with like 50 points or more

works at a nonprofit assisting immigrants in court

and apparently, if you're an attorney or staffer at a non-profit that assists migrants and immigrants in court.. ten bazillion trillion mega points.

this guy isn't the only one being targeted.

I know the logical sequence of events is probably the attorney being an informed contact as a representative having their details caught up in a crude, talentless scrape and the axiom about incompetence over malice but i realllly think this is a case of ¿Por qué no los dos?

Off topic, is there a way on Lemmy to link to a specific comment/post so I could still remain on my instance?

For exempt this opens web browser to lemmy.world, I'm on lemmy.ee and would still want to stay within the app on my own instance.

Edit: this time on topic. Yeah, they very likely are using LLM for decisions. Same thing happened with those ridiculous tariffs. I can't believe they are this dumb to believe LLM is anything more than a fancy chat bot and isn't actually thinking.

The "exotic" names are probably getting auto-blasted. It feels exactly that stupid.

Well obviously those specific examples are probably radical left antifa terrorists (/s)

Title 8 Section 1182(d)(5)(A) The Secretary of Homeland Security may, except as provided in subparagraph (B) or in section 1184(f) of this title, in his discretion parole into the United States temporarily under such conditions as he may prescribe only on a case-by-case basis for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit any alien applying for admission to the United States, but such parole of such alien shall not be regarded as an admission of the alien and when the purposes of such parole shall, in the opinion of the Secretary of Homeland Security, have been served the alien shall forthwith return or be returned to the custody from which he was paroled and thereafter his case shall continue to be dealt with in the same manner as that of any other applicant for admission to the United States.

It makes no sense at all to try and apply this to a citizen or a visa holder.

Very brass tacks for this kind of official legal document

You should be accessing the registered Republican party members list and emailing them this. Just the low level voters. Not the big guys. 10 or 15 per day. Every time one of these stories break, send more.
