I was in college and a friend of mine who I grew up with had her mom's house to herself for 4th of July weekend so she threw a party. No alcohol at the party, but I was invited to stay after the party ended with just her.

She brought out the alcohol she had purchased from a friend who knew someone old enough to buy liquor. There were a few different bottles, but I mostly remember a large plastic bottle of Joaquin's white rum that we mixed with orange juice. It was terrible.

We had sex that night for the first time. Been together well over a decade and married for close to a decade.

US Army, winter 1996. Just got onto base, pretty fresh from BASIC. I open my barracks door and McBride (RIP brother) says "Here, drink this!" with his devlish grin, blocking my entry and holding a shot glass of some clear liquid. 18-year-old private me swigged it down and nearly choked on the shot.

"WTF is this?", I asked, gasping and choking.

"Everclear!" he said joyfully, moving away from the door while I gagged, challenge completed.

I passed his...test?... and I was in the friend group.
