Complete with built-in spyware and censorship.

I'm just assuming that any open source rebranded as European is a scam. Somebody trying to ride the wave to make money.

I actually had a look since I did vaguely remember an EU Linux petition and sadly, @[email protected] already killed it

While there is currently no formal project to establish an "EU Linux," there are many ongoing initiatives that support the adoption of open source solutions within public administrations across Member States. These efforts contribute to the EUโ€™s broader objectives of transparency, security, and technological independence in the digital domain.

Pity that It's FOSS isn't on the fediverse, otherwise I'd tag them here...

Are you sure it's them? It's not listed in their socials

Mh, good call, never checked this.

Unrelated, but it looks like It's FOSS is owned by an Indian company! Sweet!

While it is an interesting idea, I can not imagine the EU just saying yeah we are going to use this. If they decide to go the Linux route I think they will use something that is carefully thought out by an team and not just one person.

SUSE already has quite a sizeable number of municipal users in Germany. It wouldn't be hard to imagine the EU contracting with SUSE.

Yes maybe sounds at least more plausible.

Besides the name, why does this fit this sub? It's just a rebranded American product ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

The name sounds awfully close to ios

Why would the EU use a Fedora based distro rather than just OpenSUSE?

[โ€“] [email protected] 10 points 5 days ago

Yeah, there's probably multiple distros based in Europe, but openSuse is definitely the biggest one. Just use that and support an established player instead of building something from scratch.

[โ€“] [email protected] 52 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The name is misleading. It's just a one-man project to create a new Linux distro which has nothing to do with EU. Out of all the good European options, they chose to go with an American distro as their base. And to manage their project, they use an American Git provider.
