General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both [email protected] and [email protected] .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

UK taxes on big tech firms may be changed as part of a deal to avoid US President Donald Trump's next raft of tariffs, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has suggested.

She said talks are "ongoing" about tweaks to the Digital Services Tax (DST), which affects global tech giants like Amazon and Meta.

The 2% levy introduced in 2020 raises about £800m a year for the UK, but the BBC understands it could be altered in exchange for the US not imposing more import taxes on the UK, following the barrage of tariffs Trump has already announced.

The potential change was criticised by the Liberal Democrats, who said Labour is "at risk of losing its moral compass".

I'm wondering what UK based tech companies are critically dependent on American customers? My gut would have said it's better to accept the reciprocal tariffs.

Unfortunately, it may be a broader attack: "we're going to tax all steel imports unless you stop trying to make the broligarchs pay tax". Wonder if they'll force us to lower food standards too.

Yes, the UK has a rich and decidedly unproud history concerning appeasement

UK gov still unsure who their friends are and what their mission is? Wasn’t there an election last year?

So you mean being part of a group to support these kinda decisions is wise and when you're all alone, you get bullied? Who would've thought it?

To be fair the EU is also getting bullied.

A while back Zuck was looking smug about UK regulation like the OSA after he went all in on Trump because he knew tariffs could be used to change UK digital policy and it looks like we are starting to crumble under pressure already.

Tax cuts for billionaires was never going to be a good look, but given this comes after slashing cuts to those who are worst off...

Cuts to disabled people and civil servants. Hand money to silicone valley broligarchs.

Red Tories.
