News and Discussions about Reddit

Welcome to !reddit. This is a community for all news and discussions about Reddit.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules

Rule 1- No brigading.

**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.

**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

Apparently saying [some stuff] is now against the rules too even though they never told us

Lemmy.ml enacts censorship in this manner as well, as too does Midwest.social. But there are so very many other instances that do not, making the former easy to avoid while being able to engage with a ton of content:-).

.world actively removes Luigi posts. Lemmy.ml does not.

Recent example: https://lemmy.world/comment/15689396

Lemmy.ml enacts censorship in this manner as well

I was talking about censorship in general, but you might be right specifically about Luigi mentions on those instances, I would not know.

There are whole entire communities dedicated to discussion of this effect - e.g. [email protected].

Your example removed comment is fair, although done by a community mod rather than as the OP article here suggests done without the Reddit sub mods even being able to see the comments prior to removal. Then again, Lemmy.World is rather authoritian on the spectrum. You can always move your account to some other instance that you prefer better btw, like lemmy.dbzer0.com if you want a more anarchist experience or slrpnk.net for communism.

The beauty of Lemmy is not that we are a so-called "free speech platform" - bc we are definitely NOT that! - but rather that we can easily shift over to somewhere else if need be, even spin up our very own instance (that one takes resources, time, and technical knowledge).

For example, I've given up on most of the largest communities on Lemmy.world, most of the time, and subscribe rather to smaller versions elsewhere.

this is happening on tiktok too. I got a violation warning for criticizing tiktok on tiktok. They said I was "bullying." This is some social media shit that is happening across platforms. I know I am not making this up in my head.

I was a 12 year Redditor, with nearly 1 million Karma, so I was a major contributor for over a decade, yet I was recently perma-banned for repeating a perfectly normal anti-Trump/ anti-Insurrection opinion that I had previously stated numerous times with no warnings. Once Trump was elected, I was PERMANENTLY banned the next time I stated that opinion.

Ohanian has announced that he wants to buy TikTok, and everyone knows that TikTok's new American owner will be personally chosen by Krasnov, so hell want make the Sociopathic Oligarchs compete like dancing monkeys. Only those who have followed his orders, smooched his fat ass, and paid sufficient bribes will be considered. So they are combing through Reddit and banning anyone who might hurt HitlerPig's feelings.

At first I wasn't happy about the much smaller comment sections on Lemmy, but then I realized that it also isn't flooded with bots, trolls, endless stupid terrible puns, and overmoderation.

Welcome to Lemmy, here are a few pointers to help you settle in

[–] [email protected] 12 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

My guess is they want clean and aligned data to train AI. They’ll save time and money by getting people in line early, or banning those that don’t follow their rules.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 hours ago

I think this is precisely it.

[–] [email protected] 34 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I was just banned from Reddit for promoting Lemmy and upvoting anti-Trump comments. No joke 😂 It finally happened

[–] [email protected] 4 points 12 hours ago

Christ on a bike. At first I thought people weren't being truthful when they said they were banned for miniscule things but there's just so many of you. It's unbelievable

[–] [email protected] 29 points 1 day ago

It's a good sign actually. They're scared! It means the discourse can, and will, make a difference.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's because 'Spez' (Spaz?) or whatever felt the fear. He knows he's being a shithead and probably believes that someone will be gunning for him if the rethoric is allowed to grow. It's a fearful bid for self-preservation.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 hours ago

He got paid 200 million or someshit to implement this garbage. Reddit users have put in so much time on the site adding data to feed AI, but it has alot of shit posts too. Now it'll be full of yuppies trying not to get banned so they don't have to use the fediverse. Reddit was better when it wasn't making profits for shareholder at all costs.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

We honestly need a tracker for him similar to [email protected]

[–] [email protected] 5 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

One of my old burner accounts was banned. Because I said we should throw shit at Reddit HQ. Go walk your dog and save a wet one. Then take a walk by the office.

a website that ostensibly prides itself on giving its users and communities a platform for free speech

lol come on now

[–] [email protected] 25 points 1 day ago (2 children)

What even is "free speech"?

Does that mean I can post a magnet link to a Pirates of The Carribean movie?

I personally don't consider any platform "free speech" unless I can roleplay Captain Jack Sparrow. 🏴‍☠️

[–] [email protected] 3 points 20 hours ago

Good a metric as any

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Free speech in the US covers literally anything besides direct threats.

Free speech in the US covers literally anything besides direct threats.

That is not true. Some examples are listed here:

Cool, lemmy test it:

Link to Pirates of the Caribbean (the 3rd movie): magnet:?xt=urn:btih:976CE4DA9AC1CDC032B854449541D3EA367C076D&dn=Pirates%20of%20the%20Caribbean%3A%20At%20World's%20End%20(2007)%201080p%20BrRip%20x264&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.opentrackr.org%3A1337&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fopen.stealth.si%3A80%2Fannounce&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.torrent.eu.org%3A451%2Fannounce&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.bittor.pw%3A1337%2Fannounce&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fpublic.popcorn-tracker.org%3A6969%2Fannounce&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.dler.org%3A6969%2Fannounce&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fexodus.desync.com%3A6969&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fopen.demonii.com%3A1337%2Fannounce

Oh shit its lemmy.world... oh well, see y'all in the mod logs 👀

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 day ago (2 children)

MAGA style 'free speech' where we're all free to have the opinions of right wing christian bigots forced onto us but speaking out against right wing christian bigots is 'hate speech' or 'wishing harm' or whatever other fucking excuse they can come up with.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Speaking out against right wing Christian bigots is literal persecution. Who would've thought that one of the greatest majorities living in the Freest Country on Earth would be so ever oppressed. uwu

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago
[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago

And permabanning them for making anti-Nazi statements. Soon it will just be bots upvoting content created by other bots. Waste of electricity.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago

I’m just glad there’s a broader discussion about it, this is exactly what we need.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago

Got banned multipe times for saying things like 'Lorena bobbit' or 'federal workers shouldn't take their jobs back if they get rehired' so...guess we'll see how long it'll take ya'll to get sick of me...😅

[–] [email protected] 50 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The r/PublicFreakout team suggested that because of this public scrutiny, from both shareholders and government-linked figures like Musk, "Reddit is under serious pressure to get its userbase under control” and imposing whatever haphazard measures it can to accomplish this.

Lmao. This is currently the top post on /r/all. How's that control working out for you Spez?
