But it seems they only revlealed some of the code and not the engine nor assets.

So compiling the code could be pretty difficult.

They released the engines for the games minus 3rd party libraries they didn't have rights to. Working builds were available within a day of the code being released as people found copies or wrote replacements for the missing code.

OpenRA existed since a long time - You could play in 4k on modern windows since many years. EA didn't do anything revolutionary really

This includes stuff like generals zero hour

Also it's pretty interesting to see the actual code.

Is it actually missing the engine? That looked like it was there when I skimmed a couple of the repos

Missing assets is pretty common when they open source commercial games, the rights of the art is often more complicated than just doing the game code.

I wonder how hard it would be to make some minimal placeholder resources/assets, sufficient to build the game and for it to run, even if it won’t look good or be particularly playable.

I like it when the only useful piece of information is missing: https://github.com/electronicarts

The resources are missing but you could already have those everywhere else on the internet.

Now what's missing is where will all the fans and modders hang around :-)

I sure hope we'll get some nice rehashing out of this!

About the graphics, someone will probably make a ripper of the bought copy you have, a bit like Diablo 1.
