Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

MODERATORS

The most recent being the jeans trend. It was funny, I get why everyone enjoys a good shitpost. Some of the shitpost are top quality and fun for all to enjoy. But after a couple of days the shitposts just turn to shit posts and its just upvote farming low quality content and kills the joke.

Welcome to the trillionth normal opinion which isn't even remotely unpopular.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

This has that same energy of why I said people hate Nickelback.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 8 months ago

That's why I like that my instance simply got rid of up and downvote counters on profile. It means nothing. Someone can shitpost trends and get thousands of upvotes but in reality be a horrible person with horrible takes.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago (2 children)

If the upvotes are easy, then it's still relevant. Once the upvotes becomes hard, the majority of people are done.

Just because you get tired of a trend first doesn't mean the community as a whole is.

Well that's why I posted it on unpopular opinion.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

I agree most of these verge on dad jokes at best and maybe go on way too long. I will say l genuinely enjoy to see the camaraderie and spike in participation.

When I get tired of trends I take it as signal to get off social media for a bit. Lemmy'll still be here when I get back, I scroll too much as it is.

Generally, this. I feel like its my fault if a joke on the Internet is getting too old.

I'm pretty proud of the fact that I self-moderated my internet use so well, I never learned the words to "Let it Go" until someone decided it was good to start playing it as holiday music at my workplace a while back.

And i that case, I got paid to get frostrolled, or whatever it was called

(Still though, there's limits to this kind of thinking. its a useful coping mechanism for dumb shit, but a therapist did point out that its actually pretty unhealthy with genuinely abusive situations. So be cognizant of blame assignment!)

Ain't nothing wrong with let it go. It's a good song. Just played to death is all.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Yeah, it is a good song, and I get why people love the movie, but its not one of my personal most favorite things ever.

Which is why its good I didn't have it ruined by the meme- I can still go watch the movie and enjoy it with people who really are that into it and have a good time.

I love a good fanwatch with super nerds, (recently watched Revolutionary Girl Utena with my sibling who is a huge fan, and am trying to get through a reading of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms because of a friend who is a big fan, but that's gonna take some time) and I feel bad for Frozen fans, because one of their favorite things has a bit of a stigma attached. I really like My Little Pony and considering the reputation of G4, I get it.

I feel like the fact that these trends are diverted to a specific community, as opposed to being a part of broader meme communities, indicates this opinion probably isn't that unpopular.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I think its great that its lemmy, lemmings, and there is this strong tendency to just drive shit off a cliff.

on brand. gj lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Lemmings don't really do that, fyi.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

So the videogame was wrong?? Was my whole childhood…a lie?!?!

downvoted because this is a popular opinion

New ~~unpopular opinion~~ no stupid question post:

Why do people post popular opinions on unpopular opinions

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago

You can go right and... no I'm kidding, that was a quality troll

[–] [email protected] 18 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I block all the shitpost subs. The posts are mostly shit.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

What if I told you that's why I subscribe

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

I would stand up and walk out on you.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 8 months ago (3 children)

This very post is a part of the cycle. Trend starts getting popular. Trend gets way too popular. Trend drags on for too long. Posts start appearing calling for the trend to end. This usually result in another round of people doubling down yet again on the trend. Eventually a new trend begins…

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

Yeah, the cycle lasts maybe a week or so, it can last longer or shorter depending on how much the meme evolves as it bounces around different groups. Sometimes it only lasts for like a day or two, sometimes it just builds and builds over time and lasts for what like, two weeks, or even lays dormant for awhile before it pops back up again and lasts for another cycle. And some get inducted into the Meme Hall of Fame and continue on for years and years after the fact.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Damn. I've posted long enough to become the very thing I hate. But like I've replied to a few other people it's not the length of the trend itself but how the quality of posts in the trend degrade over time.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Upvotes and downvotes mean very little, here. Trying to farm them would be a pretty big exercise in futility.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] -2 points 8 months ago (1 children)

That's not an indication of farming though.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago

Not in the sense of employing bots and all that, but it sure leads to people jumping on the bandwagon.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 months ago

Doesn't stop people from doing it.

[–] [email protected] 42 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (2 children)

Everyone gets tired of it at a different time. Someone found out about it just now and they are enjoying it just as much as you did the first time.

(this is the second post I see about jeans, I assume I am too "blocking c/*memes" to understand)

[–] [email protected] 5 points 8 months ago

My nephews just started saying YEET and other mid-2010s "slang" all the time. I don't insult them for it (they are both under 10) but damn it gets annoying. I'm sure I did the same thing as a kid.

Shitpost trends that never die seen a lot more like that to me. Kids get a pass because they're too young to have their own thing but seeing teenagers and adults continue it....I wish they'd get new material.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

I can agree with that point. People might be late to the joke, or enjoy it for a longer time. But the quality of posts is also important, and I think that's the where the difference comes in. Someone takes the time to think of a good pun, or a high quality photo shop, I can appreciate that even if I don't fine the joke funny anymore. When the post is jeans jeans and it's a drawing done in 5 seconds in paint of 2 pairs of poorly draw jeans it's not funny and just upvote farming, whether you just discovered the joke or not. That's my take anyway, I know we won't all agree.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Shitposts aren't supposed to be high quality. It's in the name

[–] [email protected] 11 points 8 months ago (1 children)

They still should reach the bar of “not garbage” though.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago

Well that's up to the audience to decide
