I like cats very much and cats like me. But existing within an ecosystem or society means you have to create rules that solve for larger outcomes than the scope of you and your cat. Bird play an extremely valuable role in the ecosystem. Cats frankly, a bit less so, even though they are great pets.
I think the best approach here is to step out of your own day to day and think about the best balance to be acheived with this particular issue between humans and the environment they live in. Pretend you are the emperor of the world and you need to make the wiseset decision you can that maintains a sustainable balance. Would your choice be unhindered cat population expansion?
