If you mean self-checkout, they're not being replaced by machines they're being replaced by you. It's just more shadow work you are expected to do for free.

As a socially anxious person, I absolutely love self checkout. Unless I have like a zillion items, then I use regular checkout.

The self checkout at the grocery here makes you have a worker check and enter your coupons for you. Even though they have barcodes. And cameras galore. And they mail you dozens of coupons every week.

What’s even the point of self checkout at that point? It took longer waiting for them to come check and approve my three coupons to save $1.50 than just going through regular cashier line, and I didn’t even get to avoid talking to someone. Did that twice and won’t do it again.

If they want me to work for them, I’m gunna need an employee discount. I hate everything about self-checkout. I have yet to find an implementation of it that is better than the default cashier experience.

(This is not meant as saying you are wrong for your preference ofc, I just don’t understand how people actually like them)

As a socially anxious person myself, I like the idea of not having to interact with a cashier, but I hate the idea that some rich guy is profiting off of killing jobs and putting the work on me to do, so I only use them if I have one or two items and there’s no line.

Same for me. When I need to, I like to go for regular checkout lanes without a bagger so I can move to the end and offer to bag my own things. It gives me something to do rather than just stand there awkwardly.

There's one cashier at my local grocery store who will often add a 10% discount as a thank you. Which is actually a crazy wage for the couple minutes of work.

I also play a game at Trader Joe's where usually I'm mostly stocking my freezer so it's a lot of boxes. I make my cart the neatest damn cart I can and I win my game if the cashier comments on it.

Yeah I love self checkouts, I don’t have to talk to people and just get out with my stuff quicker

You save a lot of time from having more checkouts in a smaller space and can go at your own pace.

Can go at your own pace

I so do not want to be behind you in the self checkout line.

You have lines for the self checkout? There are 4 self checkouts for each replaced checkout.

Your own pace is slower than cashiers that do it as a job though.
