By the way, the r/poppi subreddit has been deleted. Pepsi silencing all dissent. I would say to "pour one out" for Poppi, but I don't recommend buying these sodas, and I don't drink soda in general (water remains undefeated).

I'll go even further and say that people trying to lose weight should drink diet soda instead of water. (I mean both are better than regular soda, juice, or other sugar containing beverages) - https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/oby.21327

Regarding the BHI -

Huge error bars that aren't even graphed properly. They've tweaked numbers pretty oddly here.
The "Hydration Index" refers basically to how much your body retains the fluids (fluid in - fluid out after some time). That really is not a good measurement of being necessarily healthier in literally any respect. I would argue Hydration Index is a hugely misleading term.

Your second study literally states up front that they were paid by Coca fucking Cola.

Reading papers is cool, but it is dangerous to see one conclusion somewhere and spread it as factual advice.

Finally, there are some indicators that diet soda can induce diabetes (possibly moreso than full sugar in some cases). Even if everything above is true, I suspect diet soda would still be a net health negative.

well yes actually. like half a can of diet 7up or sprite (or just carbonated water) is actually pretty great for plants. long known trick in gardening communities - but the kind of advice you'd hear from like your 80yo grandmother when you ask her "how are your pothos always so happy" and she tells you "i give them half a can of diet sprite every other month" and you scoff at her cause that sounds deranged - but she's right.

go ask your local flower shop about it they'll probably nod and go "yeah some diet sprite in their vase water helps keeps cut flowers alive"
