On the final days of the war the Nazi Government had suggested suicide as an option against both the American and the Soviet menace, thousands of Germans followed through, primarily making use of drugs to kill themselves.
In this image, the family used a Cyanide Capsule, spending their final moments in a park.
I probably would have done the same in their shoes. Better a quick death than being on the receiving end of atrocities from the Soviets. Rape, torture and murder were very common at the time. No, this isn't Nazi apologia.

Perhaps. The real shame is how their shit licking government left them with suicide as an only option.
On one hand, I understand the decision. The Soviets were anything but restrained, and the Nazis beat that drum as loudly as they could.
On the other hand, with the benefit of hindsight and not being immersed in Nazi propaganda, your chances of getting through the Red Army's advance and occupation were much higher than, say, with a state policy of industrialized genocide poised against you.
But then you'd end up in eastern Germany 😞
A drab fate, to be sure, but probably better than death.
