TIL Hourglasses where very common in Jolly Rogers.

However, as far as I understood, this was because when the black flag was raised, the victim had limited time to surrender, if they didn't, then the red flag would be raised which meant no quarter.

It's odd to add it to a blood flag and kind of pissy IMO.

I know the hourglass is often used to symbolise the limited time we have on Earth. This is why you often see hourglasses in cemeteries (memento mori).

Wasn't a red flag intended to mean "no mercy"? (similar to the Oriflamme or the dragon banner)
