The funny thing about 9/11 truthers now is that they're all conservative hawks, so the idea that Bush engineered 9/11 to justify the Iraq War has largely been dropped and replaced with some weird shit about how it was all a real-estate plot or some bullshit and Iraq was just a byproduct.
The real conspiracy "theory": the US gov pushed 911 truthers to delegitimate any narrative except the official one.
("Theory" because this basically has to be true at this point. Also see the push to platform cranks like flat earthers and associate them with "conspiracy theory".)
I wonder if there was a plan to platform vaccine cranks, but this one eventually escaped containment and now the cranks are running the CDC.

100%. The Truthers never actually "follow the money" or ask "who benefits" (except when they do the generic conspiracy theory "It's da joos!" thing they always end up doing). Best way to tell the difference between an actual conspiracy and a "conspiracy theory" made up to distract. The questions that should be asked aren't "what is the physics of this" but "who benefits and why, and what have the implications of this been?" The actual, tangible real world effects of the event need to be analysed, not "The twin towers had enough fire extinguishers to put out a fire that size therefore the tower was destroyed by laser beams" or whatever.
