There's a long con possible here. A toilet in the same type of bronze metal the statue is made of should be cast. Place the bronze toilet the bathroom of a museum that documents the atrocities committed by the south on slaves. Put a sign next to the toilet claiming the toilet is cast from the metal of the famous Lee statue. Make sure the toilet is unisex so everyone has a chance to use it. Visitors will gleefully urinate and defecate on what they believe is the remains of the statue of Lee. They aren't really, but they will be okay being fooled for this part. They are an important element of this con.

Inevitably the toilet will be stolen by Lee supporters. Looking to remove the shame of the destruction of the original statue, they will cast it back into something meaningful to represent Lee again, perhaps another statue of Lee. They'll photograph this result and publish it publicly but keep the new statue safe and hidden. They will crow about undoing the indignity done to Lee's image and how there's nothing anyone can do to get the statue again, and how they won this battle.

It is then that the museum reveals its deception that there was no special origin of the bronze of the toilet and what the Lee supporters have done instead is erect a new statue of Lee made from bronze that all of us defecated into. The new symbol of Lee is truly representative because of the shit and piss it contains.
