I doubt that any professional interior or lighting designer would just put a single omnidirectional ceiling light in the middle of the room and call it a day, for good reason.

Well, they might because it's cheap.

Well sure, but the point is they wouldn't do it because people prefer it.

Indeed. At least not as a some form of lighting. Better to have area and spot lighting (and flexibility for different moods/situations).
