Adding to @Muzzle answer, the smaller you go with boats, the harder it becomes to sail offshore. Don't misunderstand me, the Vespucci is huge (83 walkable meters long), it definitely isn't like sailing on a 10m sailboat, and it operates on wind and on engines (they are well hidden, but it has modern diesel engines).
