He got further than Sanders on a significantly further left platform.
No more half measures. That is the lesson from all this.
He also seems more down to talk shit about the fucking ghouls around him, which Sanders never did.
The US appears majority right-wing and the government has many fascists but most people aren't represented by any politician and so don't really engage, aside from checking the boxes of who they have been told are on their side. Actual socialist policies are helpful and people can see that, even US conservatives when they aren't just parroting the talking points from the pundits. But especially in a city like NYC, Trump called it an 'Anarchist Jurisdiction' in 2020 and that's ridiculous but there is some truth to the revolutionary potential.
