In Greek mythology, the hero Perseus was famous for killing Medusa, the snake-haired Gorgon whose grotesque appearance turned men to stone. This painting, however, shows a later episode from the hero's life. At Perseus's and Andromeda's wedding, their nuptials were interrupted by a mob led by Phineus, a disappointed suitor. After a fierce battle, Perseus finally triumphed by brandishing the head of Medusa and turning his opponents into stone.

Sebastiano Ricci depicted the fight as a forceful, vigorous battle. In the center, Perseus lunges forward, his muscles taut as he shoves the head of Medusa at Phineus and his men. One man holds up a shield, trying to reflect the horrendous image and almost losing his balance. Behind him, soldiers already turned to stone are frozen in mid-attack. All around, other men have fallen and are dead or dying. Ricci used strong diagonals and active poses to suggest energetic movement.

The analysis found that oil companies have long influenced universities to focus on climate efforts that would enshrine a future for fossil fuels, despite experts' repeated warnings that the world must stop burning coal, oil and gas to avert the worst climate impacts.

"The science has been telling us that fossil fuel phase-out is the No 1 thing that we need to focus on, but within our universities, there's very little research on how to do fossil fuel phase-out," said Jennie Stephens, a climate justice professor at Maynooth University in Ireland and study co-author. "This provides some explanation for why society has been so ineffective and inadequate in our responses to the climate crisis."

Despite the authors’ efforts, the scope of fossil fuel funding on campus remains unclear because the vast majority of university research centers do not disclose their donors publicly. One 2023 report from the non-profit Data for Progress found that fossil fuel companies donated at least $700m to 27 US universities over the past decade, but the authors noted this was almost certainly an undercount.

In his written representation, Abdelrazik's lawyer Paul Champ argues the witnesses are "very experienced dealing with highly confidential matters" and calls the suggestion that they might blurt out classified information "speculative at best."

"The open court principle is especially important in this case because it involves allegations of malfeasance and complicity in serious human rights abuses by senior government officials," he writes.

"There is a strong public interest in the public hearing government witnesses defend their actions in this case."

CBC News is seeking to intervene in the case, arguing the Crown's motion "would unjustifiably limit the open court principle and infringe upon the freedoms of expression and of the press."
