Ask the guy asking the question „do I have to point out who is who in order to pass through?“

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Couldnt you just ask:

"Tell me which door is safe while using a sinonim of truth"

Or

"Tell me a sinonim of truth while precising which door is correct"

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I like your thinking but I hate your spelling.

Synonym.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Sorry, i confused it with the romanian word "sinonim"

The traditional solution is to ask which door the other guard would say is safe. The response will always be the dangerous door.

Something that has always bothered me with the "one of us tells the truth, the other one lies" conundrums is couldn't you just ask a simple question with a known answer to check who's who? Something like "what's 1+1" or even a logic question like "if A is true and B is true, is the condition of A AND B true or false?"

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Then you've used up your quota and can't ask any more useful questions.

with a lot of these riddles you don't get to ask a question, you can only listen to their statements to determine who is telling the truth.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Yes, that would let you know if the one you asked tells the truth or lies. But IIRC those riddles are usually constructed such that that is not enough to solve them. For example, sometimes there are more than two people that you need to identify. Or you need to find the correct door amongst multiple. All with a single question to one of the people.

Tim, the third guard who stabs people who ask tricky questions.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

The full riddle limits you to one question.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (3 children)

Either of their proposed questions should still immediately tell you which door is which, though.

What would be really fun is determining which door tells the truth, then coming back periodically and asking it questions about how the setting's metaphysics work, or where an important NPC is at the moment, or what the BBEG's weakness is.

No it doesn't.

There are two doors. One door leads to death, One door leads to salvation. You have one question to ask. "What is 1+1?" You ask the guard on the left. The guard replies "Three!". The guard on the left is clearly the liar, but you're out of questions. You have no idea which door to go through.

Knowing which soldier is telling the truth doesn't tell you which door is which. You'd need a second question for that to help.

"I don't know" can be a truthful statement. Why would door guy be omniscient?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Yeh but non answers are usually not allowed because use of them can easily make the riddle completely unsolvable.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

The truth telling guard doesn't have to be in front of the safe door.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

This would be a pretty amusing encounter I think.

Mage: "Uggghh... well I translated the inscription on the door. We have to resolve their quarrel to dispell the magic lock."

Bard: "So hey fellas, my party and I saw you from across the dungeon..."

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

I like the referenced riddle because you can't "fully" solve it, in the sense that you know all the information. You can figure out which path to take (which solves the riddle) but you cannot simultaneously know who lies and who tells the truth, which gives the riddle a bit of an unresolved feel. (I'm assuming it's one yes-no question only.)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

"you ever fuck this guy's wife?"

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Iiiii forgiiiive you!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Not gonna lie, I thought guard 2 was mario...

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Ask either do you have a nose, the one that always tells the truth has to say yes, the one that always lies has to say no.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Ok, so you used your one question finding that out, now how do you find out which door is safe now that you're out of questions?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

What doors? Post doesn't mention any doors.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

The riddle being referenced is an incredibly well known classic riddle. The full riddle is normally left out when jokes are being made about it for brevity, but the actual riddle does not work without the doors.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

That's where the clause about having just one question comes into play.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

You only need one answer here

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

And in the original version the traveler must determine which path to take, one kills you, one is safe.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

True, in this case they never actually said what the riddle is, they just explain the premise

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Perhaps they both lie, whenever it is convenient for them, including lying about lying, but also about not lying? :-P

And if they upgrade to the Premium package (by becoming politicians), they gain the talent allowing them to lie without ever managing to say anything at all... even while using very many words to obfuscate that fact.:-D

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (2 children)

If Guard 2 didn't mean it when he said sorry that counts as a lie right?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

If Guard 1 is a liar, that means they are both liars.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (2 children)

If Guard 2 is the one that lies, that means they can't have apologized

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Liars say they're sorry way more than people who tell the truth, I've found.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I think that's a symtom of abuse, or indicator. Don't quote me on this

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Yup. That describes my ex for sure.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Abuse also creates people who at the core lack a sense of self, so trying to fit into groups can be difficult and makes them prone to do things wrong. (my head just went into a translation error dead zone)

It's crazy how big of an impact a non-abusive upbringing can have. I've personally struggled with cognitive dissonance from my own, took me a low 15 years to accept it

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Yeah. I had a physically and mentally abusive father as well, but he wasn't much of a liar in this case. I'm 40, been on my own since 17, and still need regular therapy for all of it. So I empathize.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Plot twist: it turns out I was a guard the whole time!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

What are things I reveal to my therapist about that camping trip with the super horny bear?

I'll take... Childhood Trauma for $800

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Ha! That was funny, clever, and kind of out of nowhere enough that it's so good and I enjoyed it so much that I feel like just an upvote doesn't suffice. But I didn't quite know what to say...sooo, I'm writing this, lol. Thank you for making me laugh in such a clever, fun way! :)

Also, I'm sorry about the bear. I've got horny animal-related childhood trauma, too, lmao!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

For realsies, it was a horse, but I wasn't willing actually un-repress that memory. Anyway, time to look for some brain bleach!
