I finally decided to watch the trailer. Here's what really bothers me:

CDPR give us our first glimpse into the world of The Witcher 4 as Ciri takes on a fearsome monster called the Bauk in this trailer pre-rendered in a custom build of Unreal Engine 5.

I know it's just the first trailer, but this tells me nothing about what the game will look like, or run like. UE5 is notoriously hard to optimize properly for, and this is CDPR's first game using it. I'm already pretty sure my 3060Ti won't run it, but I'm sorta worried that we're talking 5090Ti if I want to run it on my 1440p 120Hz screen, which isn't even a high resolution or refresh rate nowadays.

I also don't like that they replaced the voice actor, but then I think this is supposed to be a more mature Ciri, whereas Witcher 3 Ciri was still pretty young. So it makes sense.

They will have to make sure it runs on current-gen consoles, so it will probably also run alright on mid-range PCs.

Yeah games using UE are always worth waiting a bit on, so many of them run poorly, either low fps or stutters and other weird issues.

I mean... This was the first trailer to stir up a bit of excitement for a game that has only just entered full-scale development. They probably don't even yet know themselves what it will look like and how it will run on what hardware. Expecting that kind of info at this point is unrealistic

Fair enough, I just hope that future trailers will be actually rendered real time. Scripted sure, but at least real time.

I love that they moved to an engine that they can find competent devs and artists for rather than having to train everyone in-house, but UE5 in particular seems to have so many issues. I think it might just be too much engine for some projects.

Determining if games are any good is getting really tiring because it involves wading through an insufferable number of manchildren whining about stupid things.

Essentially you need to find some influencers you agree with. That are willing to call out a game for being shit, too.

Wait for game to be out, wait for your favourite YouTuber to review it. Read Steam reviews that aren't oneliners or religious rants

Just don't preorder. You know what I told my friends several years ago?

"Cyberpunk 2077 is the first game I'm actually considering preordering because it looks so awesome"

I didn't. And I'm glad I didn't. I still enjoyed the game a lot, just later, after it had been patched to hell and back.

It's worth noting as well, you don't even need to agree with the reviewer, you just need to get to know their tastes. If they always negatively review games you like, then a negative review from them is basically an endorsememt.

So what is the point they are trying to make in that video?

Is it just listing facial changes since Witcher 3? Or is it whining because the girl became less fappable in their opinion and claim it is woke?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago

Well you see, she isn’t wearing bikini armor and flirtatiously interacting with everyone in the trailer, so it is woke. Wokedy woke woke.

Yeah it’s sad. I’ve also seen a lot of people crying because Ciri is just sooo boring. I’m guessing those either didn’t play or like W3.

I will say I’m disappointed in the voice actor change as I liked the original VA, but any fan will get over that pretty quickly.

Her facial shape or whatever does look slightly different from W3 Ciri in ways that don’t happen just with age but given the new engine and whatnot, who cares :) (also a Witcher goes through many physical changes so it fits lore-wise also)

My only gripes with that choice is that Ciri is a leap more powerful than Geralt, and has the training of a Witcher, so it feels a bit DBZ-esque of the ever more powerful enemy/hero. But, otherwise, Ciri is the natural continuation of the game series.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

My biggest gripe is also the power level. Witcher 3 already sets her potential way above Geralt which means for Witcher 4 they most likely will nerf her powers to not make her a, living god. Personally I would've preferred if they hadn't used Ciri in the first place because it's bound to create retcons.

Or if they wanted to make a story about Ciri they should've focused on who she is (someone with elder blood) not on who she isn't (an actual Witcher). She doesn't need Witcher powers, her innate powers are already way stronger than what a Witcher gets.

I wish she had sharper rather than rounder features to resemble her model in W3 closer, but I don't see anything wrong with her new look, and anyone who does should probably touch grass.

Also, I'm an inveterate enemy of the braid

I agree with everything you've said, but with the comment that the trailer as a whole had uncanny valley vibes to me. I think that the red pill crowd don't know how to properly voice their complaints. They see the model look different like you said and they like it less. Maybe they see the same sort of general weirdness in the characters like I do. Then they chalk it up to making characters less perfectly beautiful because they're going woke lol.

I'm soooo excited. Ciris whole story arc in the prior games. Now seeing her as an older adult.

I know this post is about the toxicity of people. But I'm excited, that's all.
