3.5 hours on heat sounds like a lot to me?

I would agree. Skip the separate decarb and just let it steep for a while. Decarb and extraction in one fell swoop.
Forbidden pesto
How is the taste? When I make butter I normally add water, this separates some of the nasty stuff. Can you do that with the POT as well?
From what I understand, you mean adding water when you add the butter to the decarbed weed, which you can definitely do. But wouldn't the water just mix with the butter and weed, and then get poured into the jar together? Or am I missing something? Do you separate the water after pouring it into the jar, before putting the butter in the fridge? I just want to make sure I’m getting the process right.
After a few hours in the fridge the butter separates from the water, you can just pour the dirty water down the drain.
That makes perfect sense! I’ll definitely try it next time. Lately, I’ve been diving into learning about cannabis, different extraction methods growing and all that, so tips like these really help. Appreciate you sharing!

There is also a step of washing your decarbed cannabis before soaking in butter or alcohol to absorb the THC.
Worked well when we used abv. Really removed the burnt and leafy taste out.
Pretty much just soak your decarb until it doesn't smell, with multiple washes. THC doesn't absorb into water. So won't weaken your batch.
Having made butter the old school way I would suggest making a batch without grinding. Grinding the weed breaks cell walls and causes more chlorophyll to leech into the butter. You can taste it and it can cause the green color. If you use whole buds but broken up small you’ll usually get a more golden color and the taste will be less like grass and more like weed.
Would that apply mostly to electric grinders that pulverize the weed (and maybe motar and pestle) and not so much for the manual ones that just break it up enough to fall through some holes?
When you say "broken up small" do you mean smaller bud stems pulled off the larger bud, or pulling apart large and small buds with your hands?
Any grinder really, i’ve never used an electric grinder for weed. I just break the nugs into dime size chunks. They dont have to be super small, just make sure you have enough oil/butter to cover the nugs and you’ll be fine.
You can just add some water to the butter during the cooking process, it will wash out most of the the nasty stuff without ruininng terpenes or potency. It will spearate from the butter after a few hours in the fridge.
I wash my butter after the extraction. Two washes and it’s great. I’ve found washing during extraction to lower the potency.
Thanks for the tip, I’ll definitely give that a try next time! I’ve always thought grinding helps with surface area, but I didn’t consider the chlorophyll factor. I’ll see how it changes the butter :)
