Final (?) Debate thread before the election in 35 days.

Debate begins at 9 PM Eastern, 6 PM Pacific and runs 90 minutes.

Vice Presidential debates are always tricky since nobody has voted for Vice President in living memory.

Expect Vance to attack Walz on his military service.

Expect Walz to attack Vance on the whole "immigrants eating cats and dogs" thing.

Expect Vance to attack Walz on being an assistant coach, at best.

Expect Walz to roll out "Weird!" at least once.

CBS has announced the burden of fact checking will be on the candidates themselves.

Call ing out Vance’s disdain for trump, good

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Stiff and stumbly out of the gate. Nothing awful though.

First question is about the Middle East and Iran's attack on Israel. Walz is talking about how we need steady leadership for dealing with that, contrasting it with Trump.

Started a little stumbly, but already seems to be finding his footing.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Not a great start

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Walz is stumbling early on a bit

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

He'll warm up

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

Of course once I said that he sounded better lol

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

here we go. hold onto your buts.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago

What about our ifs or ands?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago

LOL at Walz just out there on his own and ready and Vance like, "WTF? He's already out here?!"

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Vance probably has marching orders to attack Harris at the cost of making himself look bad. The question is whether he passes on the chance to change his own narrative.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Vance doesn't matter. Walz needs to go after Trump and remind viewers how dangerous he is.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

Remember that Walz by his own admission is "bad at debates" and that Vance is (an admittedly insane) Yale law school graduate. Walz has done few difficult interviews, almost every mainstream interview Vance has done has been difficult because he has to defend Trump. I just think it's important to have realistic expectations.

I'm honestly not sure what to expect, but I imagine Vance will seem like a more polished politician and debater. He is awkward and supports ugly things, but he doesn't seem to get goaded easily. If Walz can summon his "everydad" persona effectively to make it appear like there's a normal candidate and weird candidate up there and use his knack for a folksy phrase or comeback, that will probably be the "takeaway."

Due to the format, these debates have kind of turned into tiktok video farming events, so let's see who gets the most meme-able sound bytes. Let the games begin.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Also remember that Vance said he wasn’t going to prepare because he doesn’t need to. Just like trump said he didn’t prepare because he didn’t need to.

I’m pretty sure Walz has spent the past few weeks preparing, and he really just needs to be his normal, relatable self. Vance being himself will likely be a disaster.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago (2 children)

The bar for Vance is super low. All he has to do is avoid a donut shop incident.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

I'm not convinced he will. He's not a human.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

Yeah exactly. I just hope they didn't try to stuff Walz full of memorized lines and facts. He seems to do a little better when he can riff a little. But you're right, Vance basically just has to trip over the low bar and throw their supporters some red meat.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

It’s pathetic that these important events have become channel exclusives sponsored by ads.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

It's pretty freaking hilarious that Vance is already planning to be in the "spin room" after the debate.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Aren't they both planning on it? That's what NBC just said.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I didn't catch that. Are you sure?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

No it was just an aside, but they were touring the spin room and said the candidates and their surrogates would be in the room after the debate.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Seriously? lol. Way to lose the debate before it’s begun.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I really hope Walz hammers Vance on women’s rights and LGBTQ issues. Just make that the focus of the whole thing, because those are the issues that will win in the margins of historically nonvoters. I really hope this campaign can finally understand why many voters are disenfranchised, and start finally enfranchising them.

Vast swathes of voters are unaffiliated because nobody cares about them. I know the dem candidates are capable of caring, but they need to show it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Dude on CBS pre-game saying he hopes Walz will focus on the border because that’s the main issue non voters need to hear, like what? That’s nearly all people hear. You’re getting paid to say this? Wtf.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Does anyone know how to watch MSNBC’s coverage of this (i prefer their commentators) without having any subscriptions?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Looks like they have a link through the live coverage page?

https://www.msnbc.com/politics/2024-election/live-blog/walz-vance-vice-presidential-debate-live-updates-rcna171510

TBH, I'm not 100% sure. I get live TV through streaming.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Thanks so much! I wasn’t able to find a good online feed, and it’s even worse since I’m old and watch these things on my Xbox, so entering URLs is worse than trying to input software codes.

Your link worked, thank you!

e: I’m seeing the pre-game coverage there, so 🤞

e2: I may have been premature. That link shows me a couple of minutes of video before I have to refresh and watch 60 seconds of ads to see another 2 minutes of asynchronous (not live) video.

I’ll post a link if I can find an actual live feed, but unfortunately it seems MSNBC really doesn’t want me to watch it.

Bingo cards here:

https://www.wired.com/story/bingo-how-to-watch-vp-walz-vance-debate/

If you get the square with "The Cathedral" and are wondering what THAT Is:

It's a term related to extremist blogger Curtis Yarvin, who's in the J.D. Vance/Peter Thiel orbit:

Behind the Bastards also recently did episodes about Curtis Yarvin, featuring Ed Helms.

We bought Beer and snacks, looking forward to Walz walzing all over Vance. 🍺🍺😀

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago

Will the fly be there to fact-check?

[–] [email protected] 24 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

“We have well developed views on public policy so we don’t have to prepare that much,” Vance said in a Teamsters press call on Wednesday morning. “We feel a lot more confident and frankly, you don’t have to prepare if you don’t have to hide what you say.”

-Jd "we make stuff up" Vance

😂🤣😂🤣

[–] [email protected] 31 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Attacking Walz on his military record while Vance had a mostly clerical job, never saw combat, was of a lower rank and was in the military for 4 years compared to 24 years? Bold move...

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'll be asleep which I suppose I should be thankful for (I've already voted by mail as an overseas voter). I'm still disappointed about the whole fact-check thing.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 months ago

The fact checking of the last debate really made it stand out. It felt like the debate served an actual purpose as opposed to just hearing what amounted to a mini rally for the candidates.

This is a huge disappointment to me, as now there is no need to defend any of their comments. It's basically just a campaign ad.
