The morning after former President Donald Trump repeated racist claims about Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, some Haitian families are keeping their children home from school for their safety, according to an area activist. Those who allowed their children did so, but with heavy hearts.

“She [my niece] was scared, but I told her to go, that God would protect,” said one Haitian resident, who asked that she not be identified publicly for fear of reprisal.

“We’re all victims this morning,” said the woman, who moved to Springfield six years ago. “They’re attacking us in every way.”

Aside from the anxiety caused by Tuesday night’s debate, the woman also said her cars have been vandalized twice in the middle of the night. She woke up one morning to broken windows and another to acid thrown on the vehicle. She’s added cameras to her driveway and tried to report the incidents to the police to no avail.

the wildest thing about these claims, is that there's literally no evidence of this shit happening, at all.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This is an OLD racist trope being brought back. Maybe the originator of it didn’t know about the trope, or maybe they did, but you don’t need evidence of this happening for a racist trope to work.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

yeah, it's definitely racist, but i think the traditional racist trope here is that asians eat dogs. I'm not aware of this extending to other groups, but i suppose racism doesn't really give a shit?

Except maybe lost pets.. but pets get lost. Every neighborhood has lost cat posters don't they?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 days ago

that's not evidence of anything.

"guys somebody died!" "oh shit there must be a serial killer around here now!" "nah man he just fell down a set of stairs"

a bunch of cats in a specific neighborhood going missing, now that's suspicious.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago

Buhbuhbuh he saw it on TV!

Can we hold the person spreading the lies and incitng violence legally responsible?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Well he wasn't held legally responsible for speeding lies and inciting violence into the US capitol

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 days ago

Yeah I'm aware. But one can still hope.

It's insane how much we have regressed with respect to this.

This country has always been racist, but at least since I've been alive, the general consensus is that racism is bad and it was never acceptable to be openly racist without being socially ostracized (to be fair, I'm referring to the region of the US where I grew up. I'm sure it varied by region).

The rise of Trump, and the ubiquity of social media has empowered these people to step out of the shadows, I guess, and show the true face of over 1/3 of voters in this country.

It fucking sucks to see

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

It's really insane if you listen to Reagan talking about immigrants being the strength of the nation and keeping the USA young and growing. And how if we ever stop with immigration or would ruin the country.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 days ago

Wait, I'm not racist, I only hate dirty immigrants, it didn't matter what race they are

-racists, probably

[–] [email protected] 14 points 5 days ago (1 children)

This isn't even the first time he's done this, remember what happened with Covid and Asian Americans? Just look at the hate groups that support him, he never really distances himself from them, and he riles them up or gives them a target whenever it behooves him to do so.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

And the ban on muslims entering the country specifically.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

I knew I was missing at least one other instance. What a jackass.

@[email protected]

In a way Trump supporters lifted a dirty bandaid from the back off this nation, allowing us to see what was festering underneath.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 5 days ago

What we always suspected is now uncontestable; the US is rotting from within and racism is our disease.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Acid?

Because of some gibberish an old, senile man sputtered out? There haven't even been any pets eaten. Are they throwing acid just incase? Wtf is wrong with people.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

I feel like I read something about one pet being eaten...

... By a crazy white lady born and raised locally

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

That's just what they want you to believe! /s

Fuck this timeline.

[–] [email protected] 37 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I hope the people who spread the lies about them get charged with incitement

[–] [email protected] 29 points 6 days ago

They won't, but there's a very good chance some Haitian families will get SWAT'd by racist neighbors.

[–] [email protected] 63 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Conservatism is harmful. It always has been.

In all of human history, nothing good has ever come from conservatism. Nothing. There is simply no place in a modern culture for harmful, regressive, hate-based ideologies like conservatism.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 days ago

I miss when conservatives tried to conserve things like national parks (i.e. Teddy Roosevelt) instead of using conservatism as a mask for racism.

It's like, it seems appropriate for a two party system to have one party push for progress, while the other advises caution. But they dropped the euphemism and have been just blatantly racist/xenophobic/anti-other for far too long to pretend now that conservatism is anything else.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

it's almost like we should do something about it instead of waiting for the government to do something about it.

it's almost like the world is on a collision course with a giant metaphorical iceberg while we stand idly by and do nothing.

it's almost like any amount of carnage and destruction would be better than a future in which we continue to let morons have a hand in guiding our society.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago

Nahhh. Don't look up.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yep. Conservatism is the antithesis of progress

[–] [email protected] 12 points 6 days ago

By definition.
