No surprise. It looks like shit, is massive, costs too much, barely has any (generation) exclusives, and didn’t seem to offer an obviously better experience than PS4 apart from load times. You couldn’t buy one for ages, due to supply issues and scalpers (so many scalpers), but when I finally managed to get one in an online shopping basket I thought about it for a few seconds and realised I didn’t want one anyway.

Pc might be more expensive but long term its a better investment. You might need to spend 1200$ or more of your budget allows but it will last longer and you can do more. I guess if you really casually play games a console is good though.

What I like about console is the same as why a lot of people like apple: it just works. I have a PC for games that are not on console (eg flight simulator in VR), but for gaming, I just want to be on my couch and turn on the game. No drivers need updating (though game updates are annoying, I can usually delay them, and I can't mess them up), no "whoops now the sound doesn't work because I updated something for another game".

PSA: If you have a compatible tv or box you can now use steam link to stream your games from your pc. Works great with the game control for me. Its still in its infancy but it works. Also, playstation does also have updates, some are forced and insanely long, depending on your connection. I‘d say consoles make sense atm for people who have no time or enthusiasm for tinkering. It would help if more people used it though.

Steam has won me over. Cheap games and free online play. And now amazing Linux support.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

„Free“ online play is kind of a marketing gag. I have heard that consoles seem to want money for online play which is ridicolous. If the server is run on the users pc/console, there is literally no reason for taking money for online capability.

And yes, linux support is pretty awesome. Also steam link!

they getting ready to sell a ps5 pro, thats what this means

[–] [email protected] 19 points 7 months ago

Latter-stage of its life cycle? It feels like it just came out. I haven't even bought a next-gen console yet. I know that there are mid-gen refreshes supposedly in the works, but sometimes it feels like both Sony and Microsoft are just kind of checking out of this generation

[–] [email protected] 16 points 7 months ago (2 children)

I'd honestly be pretty upset if Sony decides to ditch PS5 right when the system is starting to hit it's stride now. I've already been playing more PC/Steam Deck compared to my PS5 and Switch.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I've literally gotten to the point where I'm low on ps4 games and finally decided it's time for ps5. They better price drop it or I'm gonna skip it altogether if this is the latter half

Just buy a PC? The games are hella cheaper.

You can even use your PS4 controller just like you're used to.

To get a gaming PC comparable to a ps5 would set me back roughly $2-3k, and it's outdated the moment I get it. I'd still prefer a console that will always run the games I pop in. I have no idea where PC gamers get their computers but a current gen gaming PC where I am costs as much as a car. Building one is not an option, I'm just not the kind of person who can do that.

That investment can last you longer than a consoles life span, especially if you can tweak windows and run lower settings or use Linux.

There's people still gaming on 1080s

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

Yeah but there are also people still gaming on an NES. There are pros and cons whichever way you go but PC hardware doesn't have quite the same longevity as developers aren't constrained by a single design shared amongst their entire customer base. The PS4 came out in 2013 and still has games being released for it. To compare that to PCs, those were the days of a 3GB GTX 780 being top of the line.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

I'm still gaming on a 1080 but even a Deck is so good and it's $350. Less than a PS5. Maybe it's because I'm old but graphics have met the point of 'good enough' that any increase isn't all that noticeable.

So more money for a worse experience? Again that's why I and so many other will always choose consoles, cause you pop in the game you bought and it works. No need to downgrade it or sitting there troubleshooting for an hour just so you can get it to run. PC gaming is such a huge headache, I always end up returning half the games I buy on steam

[–] [email protected] 3 points 7 months ago

No, more money for a customized experience that will meet your needs for the next decade

[–] [email protected] 6 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

I have a steam library of over 100 games and I've been exclusively gaming on PC since 2014. I can count the amount of times I've had trouble playing a game on one hand since then. If you're refunding half the games you get then your PC is fucked and you're doing something wrong.

I've also never had to troubleshoot anything but modded games which is to be expected. PC gaming is easier than ever these days.

That said I fully get why so many people prefer consoles but don't spread bullshit cause you suck at using a PC buddy.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

This. Also, steamlink works great imo so playing on my couch is very much possible now, even on linux.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

Why would you be upset?

The Console Failing should mean less exclusives. More software.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

I just bought a PS5 because I've never had a PlayStation. It's great that it's basically a PS4 as well, but they're really failing to get new customers.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 7 months ago

It's three years old and the performance is fine. Shut up and collect your royalties on the blue-box versions of everyone else's games.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Latter stage of life cycle and it still only has 5 exclusives? The fuck are you doing, Sony?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Couldn't find one when it came out. Covid happened, lost my job. Struggled financially. Finally getting back on my feet. Riding cost of living and inflation eating all my spare cash. Cant afford one now. Sigh. If only they were available at release I would have got one.
