While many police forces are armed, most are better trained at not using guns at every other traffic stop like they do in the US. In my country, if a member of the police just draws a weapon, it will end in a "fill out these forms reasoning why you saw the need to draw a weapon" fest.

Northern ireland is wrong. It might be part of the UK but the psni (police service of northern Ireland) all carry handguns due to threats from paramilitaries (IRA and uda)

Japanese Police are armed? Huh.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

They are. This happened during the.occupation of Japan by the Allied forces - most specifically the Americans - after WWII.

The handgun the Japanese police carry is little-changed from the model introduced at that time, which is why it is still an ancient-looking revolver.

There are many countries where there are generally unarmed police that aren't on the map. So no idea where this source is from or who classifies generally. But it's just misinformation.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Could you give an example? Wikipedia agrees with the map shown here, aside from Botswana.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

No it doesn’t. China is listed as a country where police generally don’t carry guns and it’s not shown on the map.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

So it does! I was only looking at the map at the top. I wonder why it was excluded there.

Not arming police seems like a pretty stupid move to be honest.

Even in parts of Europe without guns, if a criminal has a knife and is attacking people, are police supposed to just hide and wait for the actually armed SWAT-equivalent in that country to show up?

Police are supposed to be equipped to deal with the most dangerous people, not arming them just sounds like it’s a job that only attracts foolish people.

I live in the Uk. We have armed police on routine patrol in high-risk areas (Airports, London Bridge, etc). Everywhere else, they’re mostly unarmed. They have tasers and batons, though.

I know it's hard for the American mind to comprehend, but our cops actually get more training that your average McDonald's fry cook. So are capable of dealing with people welding knives without 4 people mag dumping into them.

The dude in the video was subdued because he eventually just gave up and started running away. That’s luck, not training.

Also, if someone threatens people’s lives with a knife, all bets are off and if the threat is neutralized by them getting shot, they brought that upon themselves.

This super naive idealistic way of handling law enforcement is why Europe has such a problem with immigrant crime. You guys overcorrected from colonialism to whatever pansy shit you have now.

The key is generally unarmed.

UK police by and large don’t have firearms, but there are firearms officers who can be dispatched like any other officer. NZ police have firearms in a safe in the boot of their cars.

TlDr: there are firearms, but they’re not strapped to every idiots hip ready to pop off a few rounds at someone who so much as farts in the wrong direction.

How do they apprehend people without arms?

"Stop, criminal scum! You have violated the law!"

"What're you gonna do? Nibble me bum? You haven't any arms you daft bastard!"

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

Speaking from experience in Ireland, they are still armed with batons, pepper spray and other non lethal measures, along with generally being able to talk people down, who are armed with knives. In the admittedly rare cases of gun violence, we have Armed Response Units who do carry weapons.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

In civilized countries, this works.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

Because you don't need to threaten someone with death for most crime.

Most NZ police have firearms locked in their vehicles, but not on their person.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (2 children)

I'm a bit confused by the map because in the UK our officers usually carry a baton, spray or in some cases a tazer. They're absolutely not unarmed.

Most don't carry a gun, but I'd also imagine the vast majority of the time they're not dealing with criminals with guns.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

Northern Irish police all carry handguns. The UK wide approach doesn't exist.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (2 children)

That's because we have gun control, which I'm told apparently doesn't work.

Americans are often baffled to know that if you've got a good enough reason to have a gun in the UK, you can have one. We just don't dole them out like they're laptops

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

You’re told that by people who cite their own stupidity for the argument.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Do you... give out laptops? Is that in the Magna Carta or something?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

I mean we have our own problems—if you want to sign up to a predatory loan, sure you can have a laptop

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Police unions should have to pay for damages caused by their union members (not municipalities). These damages should come from police retirement/ pension funds. Professional unions will adjust and self regulate because it has a direct cost to their members.

There I solved the police problem.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

Lol no you fucking didn't and you're just spewing rhetoric we've all read for years on Reddit.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I gave you an upvote but this doesn't solve everything

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Well, my broader point is that you can't curtail abuses by professional groups if there arent consequences. The most straightforward way of creating that consequence, is, to me, to make it have some cost to them directly.

If a police departments paychecks all went down because their idiot new hire decided they needed to violate some ones civil rights, I can assure you that the department would very quickly find a way to regulate their members behavior.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Put your example in a restaurant - the new hire drops someone's meal so you lose a percentage of your pay check?

Ridiculous, unfair, dumb, illegal.

What you're advocating makes sense at the heart of it, but it would be much better to cost the police department as a whole for civil suits and things deemed immoral/illegal etc by some outside governing body. You can't take away people's paychecks based on the actions of individuals in a job. I'm on night shift and day shift Larry arrests a black guy because he didn't like the look of him and now I'm down $20?

The fuck?

See, working as intended. You would be fucking pissed and I bet Larry would fucking hear it, not just from you but from every one else too. Larrys' not gonna fuck around next are they?

The system works.

Irish guards don't need weapons, they more beds in prisons.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Police in the North of Ireland definitely aren't unarmed

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

North of Ireland or Northern Ireland?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

Both. And whichever answer someone gives is usually followed by a shit show.
