Lost power, lost all internet and mobile data and phone is out.

Power eta restoration is in 2 days.

Just posting this while I can and it still works.

This afternoon really wrecked the power grid in the SE and all traffic lights aren’t working.

But I’m safe and no trees or damage were incurred thank god.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Glad you're safe! Sorry you're having such a shit time mate.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Thanks. Just unlucky. I guess the network isn’t under any load at the moment and it’s suddenly working.

I’m going to have to charge up my power banks at work just incase this goes on for longer.

Thankfully I still have a gas stove so I can still cook basic stuff.

How’s it down your neck of the wood?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago

Sounds like a good plan!

Normally we get fucked on here but luckily we got by without any major damage.

Last time we lost power for a couple of days and it made me realise how much I rely on tech to keep me happy.

So tonight, just before stepping into the shower, I asked our fluffy cat whether he wanted to join me in the bathroom.

He meowed in response but remained on the cat tree.

Not more than half a minute later closing the door, he's at the door, screaming to be let in.

So I talked to my young relative about the people she normally associates with and her one friend who lives here too.

i have a rant.

These are the kind of kids in their late teens to early 20s whose parents found rent too high in Sydney and bought them an apartment with cash instead. Another who just casually mentions her parents rent out beachfront houses and can move between cities because they own properties everywhere, like it's fairly mundane information.

I try not to be resentful to the point where I focus on things I can't change, at the expense of things I can change. I can't personally blame these kids for something they didn't create.

But when the grind towards secure housing seems like such a Sisyphean task, and constrains so much of our lives these days, then I actually meet these kids and their friend circles being handed these assets as a matter of fact... to never know what such a fundamental part of most peoples lives involves... It's beyond just rich and poor, it is such a massive gap in life experiences and coming face to face to it is just a bit surreal and depressing tbh.

Really saps the energy out of you in even bothering to try joining the race. I don't want to grow up with all their privileges but gee, not having to ever worry about housing security when looking for jobs, partners, hobbies, etc would be very nice.

exhale well, not to try and Pollyanna myself out of the situation but I'll try and end the night now at least feeling grateful for my warm shower and power. The worst I've suffered back home is two chilli pots blown over squashing other plants.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

It's hard not to be bitter when you see the staggering difference in opportunities being handed out. Indeed these kids are very privileged and will have a big head start in life. The system is fucked.

But you're doing such good things for your niece and ensuring she didn't just go off a support cliff on moving to study. It's so helpful what you did for her and having that support will help her focus on her studies. Even if it's not a paid off house it's a lot more than some young people get and I'm sure she appreciates it immensely.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

What they have is family and no mental guilt or misplaced shame with using family assets.

How come poor people/young adults think they have to be independent, have to live on their own, have to make it on their own? That's nothing but false truisms that keep poor people poor.

kitten, you're doing really good things for your fam, the right things. 🤗

Hello everyone, hopefully you’re all ok. We have no power in Burwood, and our phone internet is dial up speed. Our ETA for power to be back on is also 1pm on Thursday. I reeeeeaally hope it doesn’t take that long, I’m not built for sponge baths.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Thursday, damn that’s rough! I saw on the news there was a fallen high voltage tower, that could be why it’s taking so long. Hopefully you can go to another suburb friend/family/workplace to charge devices and have a shower if needed?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Thankfully we got power back at 5am today! Had a hot bath tonight, which was awesome!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

Same situation and suburb, but my mobile internet isn't slow it just only connects a few seconds at a time per minute

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

I hope this helps:âš¡

[–] [email protected] 8 points 9 months ago (3 children)

Haha UE just updated return of mains power to 1pm on the 15th.

In metro melbourne.

I think not. They would be skinned and worn as coats.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

At least you have internet. Vodafone is fucked and this is the first time I could get online and it might die again in a few.

I’m already planning the safest route to work due to all the traffic lights not working.

Hope you’re ok, I think you’re my closest neighbour here online given where we live.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Internet is entirely cellular, the ntd was the first thing to go when the power died. Weirdly? My backup modem is 3G and since everything has shifted to 4g+ it's very underloaded. Running better than my phone.

We have no power but i've lived through enough bigass outages that we have plenty of creature comforts. We got fans, console power, working kettle, even a fridge. Womp womp.

If the shit folds out into tomorrow ima gonna bust out the solar panels to refresh some batteries and bring up the big bastard to run the inverter for my laptop.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I was fuming when my phone was out and mobile data wasn’t working.

I couldn’t get updates and could only send texts and had to get updates from a friend.

I’m more worried my frozen food. Got about 4kg of dumplings/gyoza that I recently bought and I don’t really want it all to go to waste because of how stretched I am financially.

The only saving grace has been my power packs and having a Nintendo Switch, my god that is a god send and also my podcasts that get pre downloaded.

Shame there’s power at work though, could have done with a day off.

I recently had solar panels installed so if the sun is really out tomorrow and power is out, what happens?

I also saw trees down on east boundary and along centre road on the way back from work. Big tree took up 1 and a half lanes on centre road near Brady Road/Chesterville Dr.

Glad you’re doing ok as well.

I hope we all get power back soon.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Your solar system most likely won't island, unless you have a powerwall or similar. They're designed to shut off if no grid feed to stop accidentally frying workers doing repairs.

Standalone freezer? Could hold if you don't open it. Icebox? Cook those fuckers and extend their lifespan.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

My power came back early morning I'm currently experiencing a weird thing were I think my power isn't stable so I can see all my lights dimming and getting brighter all at the same time.

Don't think devices are properly being powered either as my air con unit was going berserk with beeping and woke me up.

When I get home I'm going to turn off the mains for a while and then turn it back on unless it fixes itself by the time I get home.

Did your power come back? I hear South Road lights are all out at the moment.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Still ain't got shit, idly watching the chaos that is the chesty/south intersection unfold

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Some are saying 18th February 💀

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago

Yeah they're trying that in brighton. Literally in dendy's special survey. I mean, do they want to find out how far a fist can go up their arse? 'Cos that strikes me as a very good way to find out.

I wish I could open a window without having to stand guard so someone doesn't hang from the flyscreen and destroy it.

Not naming names.

Does it start with a G and end with ibsonfluffybutt?

Hey all.

Any suggestions on cheap ways to improve mental health as a young person working full-time?

It's been pretty shot lately, for all sorts of reasons.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 months ago (2 children)

For me - pick a couple of small things that are guaranteed to help you (like basics - home cooked dinner, morning sunshine, decent bedtime - what is super simple but feels delightful?). Anchor to them. You won't do everything but if there's something you can come back to as a reset it helps. Get outside and moving (running is good, even walking, or just putt your feet on grass every day and breathe for a minute.). Make some of these little spaces to feel your feelings, or just to hook into the bigger natural world.

For me its sleep and nature. I try to go for a walk every day (even a few houses and back). I stick my head out the window at night and look at the sky / clouds. Every morning I get up round 6am or earlier. Even if I just wash my face, look out the window, have a glass of water and then go back to bed. Its a little anchor.

And have a list of friends - if you've gone a few days without good easy connections, txt someone a meme, give them a call, organise a walk on the weekend. It hard but it really helps.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

This is great advice for us all.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

I really appreciate that mate, thank you.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

What are your particular concerns?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago

Relationship trouble with my partner, mostly. There's a lot of story behind that. Insecure housing isn't helping, nor is cost of living nor anxiety.

Some amount of it is definitely my own damn fault, but yeah, shitty.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Running. Only real cost is shoes. Obviously other exercise too, but running you can do straight from your front door, no travel to work into the schedule, no memberships etc

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

Good point mate, thank you

[–] [email protected] 10 points 9 months ago

- the doggo finally gets a run

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

godamnit, can't watch willy wonka anymore without thinking of the grandpajo hate memes 🙄😂

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 months ago

I am very lucky to still have power - the other side of the road is out. Internet's very patchy though, I have both Telstra and Optus sims and they are both dropping out periodically and running slow.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 9 months ago

Good news. My husband managed to talk to the neighbour and apparently they are renting. Got the details now. Still no sign of the wife. I think she might be in the freezer.
