As someone heading into retirement, after a long career in corporate and governmental stuff, my advice to the young man is to take the money. 250k will put a roof over his head for life, and the humiliation will be far less than the grinding, soul destroying, principle compromising reality of being a suit. If someone wants to pay you good money to look at your cock, they've got the problem, not you, take their money!

I wonder if he goes for it. I bet he can capitalise pretty well on his sudden fame if he's willing to lean into it. Surely being a prominent porn actor pays better than being a mediocre pole vaulter? Provided he can keep it up in this discipline, at least.
I get your point but I don't think getting to the Olympics is considered being mediocre.
Compared to us regular mortals? Definitely not. Compared to his peers? I don't think finishing 13th in a sport like pole vaulting will have him swimming in sponsorships and fame.
Compared to other pole vaulters all over the world. Yes, he won't be swimming in money, but he is still #34 world ranked. There's no definite number of all male pole vaulters in the world but even with a very rough 50k estimate he is not mediocre.
You are obviously objectively correct - I have just never encountered someone using that frame of reference when discussing sports. For example, there are literally millions of soccer players over the world, and by default the players throughout the English third division are some of the top 1%. These people can do things with a ball you and I can only dream of. Still, when discussing soccer, most people would call them mediocre.
