How to find the square root of a Llama.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

As it turned out, the llama planes were not what Jacob hoped them to be.

Is this —

Why is the coronal section labeled "transverse" and the horizontal section labeled "dorsal"? That is some batshit fucking wrongness there.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Because quadrupeds are oriented differently. This chart is accurate.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

The figures I'm looking at call the dorsal plane "frontal" which at last makes sense. Dorsal and ventral would be their regular directions in the frontal plane. I'm a brain guy so I normally only deal with the things in the neuraxis.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

It can be either the frontal or dorsal, however consider in zoology "dorsal fin". Intuitively this is because the front of these animals doesn't align with the frontal plane as it does in humans, but dorsal is a common alternative.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Dorsal plane still doesn't make sense to me as dorsal/ventral are the directions in the plane. In the same way it wouldn't make sense to describe something as the lateral plane if the directions are medial/lateral. But as I said I'm a brain guy.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Dorsal means towards the (anatomical) back, ventral means towards the ground. These are perpendicular to the dorsal plane, as frontwards is perpendicular to the frontal plane.

I'm unfamiliar with brain orientation so perhaps the tradition is a bit different!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Is the same. We'd call it the horizontal plane though. Dorsal takes a bend so it's the top of the head and the back. Sagittal sections move medial/lateral and coronal sections move rostral/caudal again taking a bend down the neuraxis of the spine.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Interesting! Thank you.

Neat that the dorsal plane bends, I could see that disagreeing with the body orientation planes

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

Also we just use anterior/posterior for the organism if you want to ignore the bend and talk about the face and chest vs the back and back of the head. All the other planes are ok.
