They live in cold climates, so they have thick fur.
The fur covers their ears to prevent the screams of the people they're mauling from damaging their eardrums.
If they were bigger they'd get bitten off more often in all the fights.
Because they hunt by using their three-dimensional sense of smell.
An apex predator shouldn't have 30mph running speeds and 3d smell-o-vision. There is no God...
