From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Honestly, IRC was a very functional, easy, free, low-resource and privacy friendly chat protocol and I don't really see why it got left behind. If you wanted image/ file support that could really be implemented client and/or server side.

Probably because it's not as flashy as Discord

IRC is still in use by several open source projects, and it can be nice for quick and open public chatting for meeting people, and to ask questions.

SimpleX. No federated messenger is good for privacy.

But I see how SimpleX is impossible for public groups, as spam is basically unavoidable.

Does it support video calls?

Yes, also PiP now

SimpleX was nice when I used it for small chats, but how is it with large groups? Matrix really drags ass with large rooms, even on native clients.

Never tried that. For sure it lacks spaces, threads, moderation, invite links, requests etc.

Correct me if I am wrong

Stream Control Transmission Protocol. It’s the Betamax of low level networking.
