Friggin half of the things in the 100+-item-long planning list I don't even remember why I added them, a handful of the things even look like "dead dove" shows (shows where the tin indicates it's probably insufferable goonbait, then it turns out to in fact be insufferable goonbait)

So I dunno maybe this thread can just as easily be used for pruning my planning list, if there's anything where there's an absolute consensus it isn't worth my time.

Or hell, maybe there's something you think my diseased self should experience that isn't on the planning list already. I'm not going to stop you from making recommendations.

In any case, time to grab some vegan ice cream and enjoy my catgirl who is both cultural and all-purpose and named Nuku Nuku, see you on the other side

Edit: I'm gonna say I'm done with binging anime for today. Between 2:15 and 10:15 PM I ended up watching, in order,

  1. All-Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku (OVA) ep 2
  2. Frieren ep 1
  3. Land of the Lustrous ep 1
  4. Odd Taxi ep 1
  5. March Comes in Like a Lion ep 1
  6. Shoshimin ep 1
  7. Makeine ep 1
  8. Mobile Suit Gundam ep 1
  9. Tis Time for Torture, Princess ep 1
  10. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei ep 1
  11. Bakemonogatari ep 1
  12. The Twelve Kingdoms ep 1

This is to say that 288/480 minutes, or ~5/8 hours, was spent on watching anime today. Depending on how I feel tomorrow, I may watch some of the suggestions in this thread that I didn't get to.

My overall favorite of the anime I watched today has to be Makeine. The others each had their own strong points, too, and might've beaten Makeine if I were in better health, but with my currently fried brain Makeine was the one that I think hit the best.

The Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) compilation movies are currently available on YouTube from Sunrise/Bandai’s own channel for free. Of course you can get anything on your list for free but it doesn’t get a whole lot more convenient!

You’ll find a lot of fans argue about whether you should watch the compilation movies or the original 43 episode series, but personally the movies are fine. You miss out on a lot of iconic 70s anime jank (the spike ball flail never shows up in the movies) but the story is more or less completely intact and modern Gundam tends to reflect the movies more than the series. All of the extremely un-subtle “Zeon is Nazi Germany” is still 100% there.

If you get hooked on Gundam though do not watch the Zeta movies. They’re weirdly animated because they switch back and forth between the original animation and 2004 animation and lots of the plot is changed.

Well, I don't necessarily want to miss out on iconic '70s anime jank!

Edit: Saw the first episode of the original series, good to expose myself to that bit of anime history.

as a himejoshi i must recommend bloom into you, even if i honestly don't like the relationship dynamic between the two main leads for the majority of the anime and the fact that it just stops in the smack middle of the story.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

i honestly don't like the relationship dynamic between the two main leads for the majority of the anime and the fact that it just stops in the smack middle of the story.

It definitely would be better if they'd gotten a second season to actually finish the story with, because their weird toxic brainworms about relationships are eventually resolved and they ultimately look back on them with something like "damn we sure had some messed up ideas and expectations when we were kids, huh?"

There's also a spinoff LN series about Saeki Sayaka that I haven't read yet.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

oh yeah i finished it and it got a lot better, just have to warn abt the anime because it is paraded as amazing and an example of something not particularly triggering when, well, early touko..

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I hate that there's so little yuri anime that ever actually finishes the story paired with how much yuri treats the buildup to a relationship starting as at least the first 90% of the story, such that Bloom into You is a standout just for being unambiguously gay and starting the relationship immediately, since its drama is more about the main characters' toxic idealist brainworms and how they work through them.

I'm in Love with the Villainess is another one that's at once toxic and bad but still a standout just for being completely and unambiguously gay, even though the LN tackles how it talks about LGBT issues better than the anime and is more open about the fact that Rae is being toxic and creepy with how she acts towards Claire and how it's bad that she feels entitled to win her as a prize for doing good deeds (but then she still does, because it's still ultimately a wish-fulfillment isekai).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I already saw the first two episodes ages ago, so it'll be interesting to see how I'll feel about it now. I remember enjoying the first two episodes but also kinda feeling like I needed to be in I guess the right "headspace" for it, is what the cool kids call it, right?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

toukos kind of a shitty girlfriend

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Twelve Kingdoms? It was an Ok 90s anime.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

A '90s anime from 2002?

Edit: Wasn't the best thing ever but it's fun how they have characters called like Cake and Sexy

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

tbf, it feels more late 90s than early 00s

[–] [email protected] 1 points 14 hours ago

The Light Novel is from 1992

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Shoushimin how to be ordinary is visually beautiful. First part is a bit dull but it picks up quick.

Makeine is great for people(me) who end up rooting for the losing girl. Has some good comedy, good drama, and very little shounen romance bullshit.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

God damn you're right about Shoshimin being visually beautiful. That was practically cinematic, will it even be able to stay that good consistently? Even being sick I still feel lucky to live in the same world as art this damn good.

Edit: I really enjoyed Makeine, that might be today's big hit.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Season 2 of Shoushimin is airing now :), it did stay pretty but more content focused as well.

Spoilers for those who say season 2:

SpoilerI thought she was setting fires as revenge so when she talked down her now former ex, I knew she was talking to me too

Makeine is my fav of the recent seasons. I almost picked up the light novels. Glad you liked it!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sangatsu no lion is great and wholesome

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

It's a popular un

Edit: Fun that there's a character that looks and sounds like Anya and the OP's made by Bump of Chicken to boot. Wasn't necessarily the most impressive first episode I've ever seen but my brain is fried and it's up against stiff competition, anyways.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

It's a slow burn, but if you're not invested in knowing more about Kiriyama's situation after EP 1 you probably won't like it

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Checkout Odd Taxi and Aggretsuko (its just a coincidence both shows have animal people in them)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Odd Taxi ruled

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Aggretsuko was a good un, my family watched every season together. I'll check out Odd Taxi, I remember hearing good things.

Edit: Odd Taxi was an interesting vibe

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

If you haven't watched it, Baccano!

Also, while Bakemonogatari is good, if you haven't experienced other SHAFT works (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Hidamari Sketch) then consider those first. Just to appreciate where the Shinbo Style is coming from (though Bakemonogatari is the second best example after SZS).

Torture princess is fun

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I have watched three of the four seasons of Hidamari Sketch, not the specials or OVAs though. For that matter I also watched Maria Holic, Soremachi and Pani Poni Dash. I've heard of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and it sounds interesting, too. And I'll check out Baccano.

Edit: I think the gore in Baccano is a bit much for me right now, especially with how that little kid died. That was a little kid, right?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Well, to say more would be spoilers.

But yeah, there's a bit of gore, but also, well, it's the kind of show where suffering gives way to happiness.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Anyways, Torture Princess was fun, but I wonder how they can make a full 12 episodes out of this premise?

Also, I was struck by the name Gabriel Ugbodaga in the end credits of Torture Princess: although non-Japanese names aren't that rare in anime end credits, I can't recall ever seeing a West or Central African name before specifically. So I looked up the name, and it turns out that Gabriel Ugbodaga is apparently an "Atlanta based Nigerian 2D Key and Rough Animator, Director and Action Consultant", and he worked on the key animation for the first and tenth episodes of Torture Princess. He also did key animation for Dandadan and Frieren among other things, and, lo, he has a YouTube channel, albeit one without any new uploads for two years.

So yeah. That's neat.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Torture Princess is literally going to be variations on a theme. If you don't like the same joke(s) to infinity, you're going to tap out quickly.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Then that doesn't necessarily bode well for it...

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei had a nice aesthetic (what's with the face, though?), and was decently entertaining. There were a lot of background gags that I didn't catch and wasn't going to rewind for, too.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

He is Kosaku Maeda, and his nickname is MAEDAX, he was the voice actor for several minor parts in the show (including playing himself, credited as MAEDAX) and also worked on the manga.

The aesthetic is the Shinbo style though, it's really like the origin of everything in Monogatari and Madoka. SZS is truly it's peak. RIP to Fujoshi-chan though (and Yoshinoya-sensei) - the voice actress died a few years back.

Also, the OPs get progressively better and more unhinged. I don't know if they kept the progression/unfinished from back when it was broadcast. For instance, RUMBA had several versions.

(CW - there's body parts, anatomical diagrams, and a lot going on. I can't think of everything but figured I should note this is not necessarily "nice" - especially the third one)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6WC_6x7YOg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAjNa6ZzCsM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxE-cl5A5Wc

SHAFT had a tendency to do incomplete OPs back then -- they'd finish the animation midway thru the broadcast of the show. It happened with a season of Hidamari Sketch too. But with Zetsubou Sensei, it was part of the experience. The style of the OPs is amazing, and eventually returned as the witches in Madoka.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

the voice actress died a few years back.

I think I heard about that, yeah. Ten years already, though, sheesh. Anilist's page for Miyu Matsuki says,

A posthumous charity event had its proceeds go to [chronic active Epstein–Barr virus infection] research, which, along with the medical history of [Matsuki's] rare case, has helped establish the disease's mechanism of infection and possible treatment.

...So, there's nothing so bad it isn't good for something, I guess.

Edit: Bakemonogatari was nice enough, by the way. The video thumbnail being a panty shot was maybe a bit of a turnoff, but the episode still managed to get me interested in where the story was going.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

If Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei's fanservice is always ironic and spiteful towards the audience (and knowing) the Monogatari fanservice is uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Sadly, more horny and closer to say, Gainax in its ethos.

You should watch Macross: Do You Remember Love? - it's a super pretty movie!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think I added that one as a way to introduce myself to Macross in general...

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

My introduction to Macross was Robotech, so there's worse ways lol.

You might have the kind of problems you expect jumping in with a compilation movie, but Macross is kinda vibes based "wow cool robot/pop music". It's anime made by anime fans, so i-love-not-thinking is fine.

On the plus side, you won't have to hear 私の彼はパイロット a dozen times before you get some better songs. The title track of the movie, 愛覚えていますか, is great and the sequence it's in is super pretty.

If you like city pop and gorgeous bubble economy anime, I'd say go for it!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

I'll always recommend Land of the Lustrous/Houseki no Kuni. It's a beautiful adaptation. Androgynous post-post-post apocalypse crystal-coral humanoids living on an island paradise, bullied by Buddhist moon ghosts. Does get a bit dark towards the end.

Frieren, from your list, is also a wonderfully chilled watch.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Frieren, from your list, is also a wonderfully chilled watch.

I stopped watching this one after going forward in the manga, early in the show's life. the whole "genocide the demons" thing was a bit too much for me.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

writing an entire arc where a demon manages to live with humans resulting in the demon realizing he can't actually live with humans even if he tries his hardest was frustrating, but frieren forgetting its an iyashikei and focusing on battle and the setup to battle was what did me in.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

but frieren forgetting its an iyashikei and focusing on battle and the setup to battle was what did me in

yeah this was so weird. the tonal shift also didn't ever fully revert, it seemed like? the manga just went on and on with combat like it was any other shonen.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

it hasn't, she's in the imperial capital defending serie while she's like "why the fuck am i here lol"

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Oh yeah, that's right, someone had mentioned Land of the Lustrous the other day and it caught my attention....

Edit: Just finished the first episode of Frieren. Why are my cheeks wet?

Edit 2: Wow, I'd completely forgotten that Land of the Lustrous was 3D CGI. It's very stylized and as you might guess from the description a bit of a trip. I honestly do like stories where basically all of the characters aren't humans, seeing how their lives differ I guess.
