I cannot believe he still has a channel worth anything. I think LTT favs might actually be worse than Swift8es

It’s a tech illiterate YouTuber for tech illiterate people that think they are tech literate

What I find funny is that he can’t even build a computer for a budget he sets out

“I had this part laying around so it’s free” or “buy this part so we can meet our budget, just upgrade it later”

That's a great way to say it. I usually just call him a "tech entertainer" that real tech people look down on. But I like your version.

The video that really polarized my opinion on them was their "storage server upgrade" video where they worked on replacing their horribly and amateurishly configured storage server.

Wendell from Lvl1 and Allan Jude (maintainer for OpenZFS) commented on LTT's setup and, while they didn't outright say anything negative, they didn't have anything good to say and their tone heavily implied they thought LTT are posers.

    What's wrong with the video?

I hope you Linux users know that none of these changes are necessary to use Windows like most people use it, right?

This is just optimization, like what any enthusiasts will do with their preferred OS anyway.

I legit don't understand how people are even using windows anymore these days. For the first time in years i did a bare metal install because my dumbass wanted to play gta online, which now has anticheat, so i decided to dualboot. First attempt to install the installer completely shit itself and the screen went black, could not recover from it. Even a full reboot did not resume the install process, so i had to run the install all over again. Now that it's finally installed i keep having weird issues with my rgb and fan control software randomly deciding to not autostart, and manually starting them does not work, or my fans just start spinning at max speed uncontrollably, and the only way to fix it is to do a reboot. Windows 11 has been out for years now right? It still feels like beta quality software, shit just keeps breaking, and then people have the gall to say windows just works lol.

For my last install I had to remove either the SSDs or NVMEs (don't remember which) or the installation would just fail. This was a 'known' issue! Fortunately haven't had to boot it for months...

Yeah... I had a USB stick that was fat32 formatted but didn't have a drive letter assigned. So… it just doesn't shw up. Now biggie, right? Quickly add one in the disk manager… except I couldn't because the "Snap-in feature wasn't installed, please use Windows Update and try again" (It was the latest Windows 11). For assigning a drive letter. Of course it would do that if I freshly format the stick…

That OS is a total mess.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

Lmao jesus, for real? Fucking disk manager requires custom fiddling and updates from stock? Wow.

I strongly suspect that the overwhelming majority of people who use Windows are going to use the OS preinstalled by an OEM, and won't ever install Windows themselves.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Yeah that's true, i guess you don't really realize how crappy something really is until you go out of your way to try something else.

For ultimative noops. Fedora Atomic. You can’t do much wrong. Only problem is that adding missing driver need some terminal experience , but tell me where it is easy to add missing driver…without catching a virus

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

I have a few users on fedora atomic distros. Found out one hadn’t been getting updated since version 36 for some reason lately.

I had the missing driver issue with my scanner, so I layered. But the scanner program was flatpak and couldn't somehow access the drivers still. Had to layer it too.

    Not hard, but very unintuitive.

In short, good for 95%, very challenging for some others.

Uhh... Unless it's 1993 again install drivers on windows is automatic in 99% of cases and catching a virus from install drivers would honestly be a feat of Herculean impressiveness.

So that would be easier honestly.

Like the only time it's easier to install a driver compared to windows is if it comes preinstalled with the kernel/os.

It's one of the few things windows does really REALLY well.

The problem with drivers on windows nowadays is uninstalling them cleanly is near impossible. Damn well near impossible. But most people rarely need to uninstall a driver.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

As you mentioned, 99% I had in the last month two devices , one from 2014 and one from 2024. The 2014 laptop had minimal missing driver problems on windows 10 that took me a while to find and fix, except for one driver that still is missing. The 2024 laptop that I wanted to reinstall windows 11, did not like it when you USB boot windows 11. It had missing drivers for everything, Network, GPU, Mouse Trackpad, the installer also prompted for Driver CD input, like , what??? I had to repair the installed windows instead, don’t know why this happened.

Archinstall getting easier than windows 11 install is kind of a fucked up future

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago

Windows has gotten so fucked lately, by the time I finally convince it to use the browser I want I still end up getting shown ads for Doom and Tiktok - even on a work domain joined computer.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 hours ago

im using ~~arch~~ win11 btw is the flex of the future

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

People usually use Windows because it comes pre installed. I doubt arch install is easier than that ;)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

That also has nothing to do with the video at hand.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago

Are you sure about that? You still have to step through a dozen setup screens and forcefully sign into a Microsoft account. Then, you have to update your new computer and reboot 4-5 times to install all updates often sequentially.

Meanwhile, in Linux-land, it installs the latest packages and updates during install when using a net installer.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

It isn't easier though. None of the settings mentioned are necessary.

It is only easier when you want to optimize your OS. Which 80% of users won't do.
