I started [email protected] which is a place to discuss the various ways of selling things online whether it's for personal stuff or to make a profit. Off to a bit of a rocky start as some people take issue with making money from reselling.
The May sumo tournament in Japan ended Saturday, and I was posting daily links to videos on [email protected]. According to trendingcommunities,
- last March when I started doing this for the March tournament, we had 47 subscribers to start and 77 to end.
- This tournament we had 83 subscribers to start and currently have 112 subscribers.
It was a pretty good experience, it gave me a reason to watch the highlight videos without feeling like I was alone in the world doing so -- even tho there wasn't much discussion, there'd be a handful of upvotes for each post showing there were at least some readers/viewers.
Last March I tried posting multiple links to youtube videos, one post per link. This got a bit confusing bc some of the videos were posted after a delay. So this tournament I just made one post like "videos for day 12 of the tournament" and put all the relevant links there, updating when the delayed ones came out. That worked a lot better. First, I was making "image" posts instead of "video" posts so I didn't have to worry about whether the thumbnail would be automatically generated, what it would be, whether it would propagate, etc. it did mean I had to find a good image from the highlights, but that was OK I liked watching the highlight videos as described above. Second, it gave me a "template" to make posts from (I just took the previous day's text and modified it) which was good bc I was usually doing it first thing in the morning and still kinda dazed.
Anyway, next sumo tournament's in 2 months, and I hope I'm able to post about it again!
[email protected] has hit over 3000 members! Huge amount. We still have the brilliant fashion postsfrom @[email protected] and kick ass women from history from @[email protected] which everyone is loving. @[email protected] is possibly the greatest moderator in the world and all is good
that's high praise 😳‼️🙈
It's true mate I don't know what I'd do without you! You work incredibly hard and you're level headed, thorough and really bring a good perspective to things
For personal reason, I had to stop my weekly post in our Journaling community. So, even though we're still getting new subscribers (nearing 600) there is not much new content/comments being posted. I don't know for how long I will too busy to post myself I hope others will keep occasionally posting ;)
Is there maybe a more active more general community that could be used to avoid having the community relying only on you? Maybe [email protected] (not that it's that much active either looking at it now)
I'll let anyone decide what's best for them. My opinion is that journaling does not need to be the most active community (it's not a practice relying on short term/constantly changing trends, for some like me it's a lifelong habit) but it does need to have enough activity to feel welcoming enough... which something it looks like I did not manage to initiate, so far. I would also say I consider journaling a very specific way of writing I would not wish to see it mixed with a more 'public-focused' type of writing. Also, we've seen more than a doubling (x3 maybe?) of the subscribers in the 6 months or so I started posting content. To me, that's saying there is a real interest for a dedicated community. And imho, with a little more patience, it may start to feel more lively.
But like I said, it's up to anyone to decide what they want to do it, and where. I'll keep an eye on the journaling community for the time being and hopefully I'll be able to quickly resume regular postings if no one else wants to do it, because like I keep saying: it's not my community, I don't own it. I'm just its janitor, trying to make it welcoming and get more people to visit and... use it ;)
Maybe [email protected] (not that it’s that much active either looking at it now)
That's a Lemmy issue, I'm afraid. We're not that many. And niche communities are the most impacted by that.
I don't own it. I'm just its janitor
Mods are janitors. If you're the only active poster in a community, it depends much more on you to stay alive than on the mods.
Nothing crazy (lol) but nothing to complain about either. Our communities are still growing at a steady pace and slowly seeing new people posting and commenting. [email protected] is up to almost 3k MAU which is decent for a community that isn't on one of the big instances I think. [email protected] isn't terribly far behind at almost 2.4k MAU.

[email protected] is showing slow but steady subscriber growth. Would be great if others would start posting to it though.
Not "my" community, but [email protected] is more or less the same. Slow subscriber growth, and still not many people posting.
Have you tried promoting them on [email protected] and [email protected]
The [email protected] yes, and I'll wait a while before posting again. [email protected] is currently promoted in the monthly SLRPNK update post, so I'll wait until next month to promote it elsewhere.
