For the past 8 years they've been saying he "may" do this, or he "may" get punished for that, and everyone twiddled their thumbs until morons elected him into office again, making it all impossible again
Similar to the case where he was convicted of multiple felonies and given (checks notes) not even a slap on the wrist?
But it's on his permanent record! Surely that's punishment enough.
The only real chance is with state charges. POTUS cannot pardon state or civil offenses.

He figured out he can just pardon himself. He doesn't care how corrupt and amoral this makes him look. Shame is a distant, foreign concept to him.
Using Trump logic, the next president could still deport him to a foreign prison. If the supreme Court says, "You can't do that.", the president can say there's nothing they can do to get him back now.
Why are you assuming that there will be a next president while he's still alive (not a call to violence)
