Shitty Ask Lemmy
its like r/shittyaskreddit except its lemmy
I had a roommate some years ago who didn't understand how credit cards work. He would max out a card on parties and drinks and good times with friends, then get another card and repeat. I warned him that it's not free money, he would have to pay it all back with interest.
At first he didn't believe me. "Of course it's free money. My parents did it all the time and they didn't have to pay anything back."
Then the bills started rolling in. A few at first, but then they became huge stacks of bills. Then warning letters, then demand letters, eventually legal action letters. My roommate finally conceded that it's not free money, but it'll be ok as he'll just file for bankruptcy.
I moved out before I saw the inevitable conclusion of this sad story.
I also had a coworker who loved to talk about sovereign citizen nonsense. He would love to talk about the benefits and how all he has to do to claim these benefits is renounce his citizenship and call himself a Moor. As far as I'm aware, he hasn't tried to pull any sovcit stunts with law enforcement yet. I guess it's only a matter of time before he puts these beliefs to the test.

You sure that's a bad choice? They seem to be doing rather well.
Edit: statement of fact, not endorsement.
They put in a leader who is making them less able to afford basic living necessities while telling them how amazing things will be. History tells us they're not doing well, either, for what little that is worth to anyone.
If you think they're doing well, you and I have a fundamental disagreement on what a good life is.
They seem to be having the time of their lives in most parts of the world. Not like I am happy about that. But they win elections and get to shape legislation and to make others miserable, that's "doing well" in my book.
So power. Power is doing well in you're book.
Fine. I'm not gonna argue that, most people would agree with you. I'll just reiterate you and I have a fundamental disagreement on what doing well and what a good life is. Because to me doing well and a good life are defined by so much more than just whether or not you have power over people.
Who said anything about "a good life"?
Look, I don't think we're in disagreement here. I also wasn't entirely serious in my first post but sardonic. What I'm saying is that right now they're getting what they want - which, I'd argue, is one way to "be doing well". Whether or not that makes you happy in the long run is a different matter. But right now they're winning a lot of fights - they're doing well.
