Clearly never had sausage, bacon, black pudding, and baked beans.

Frijoles, porotos, habichuelas, we have them all!

Beans in all of latin america are good

[–] Cowbee@hexbear.net 25 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

I could eat beans and rice with good sauces and toppings for literally every meal, they slap hard.

[–] Alisu@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Garlic and salt, plus bay leafs on the beans is all I need. Add a protein source and this is golden

[–] Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Are beans ..not the protein source?

[–] Alisu@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

Oh no, we need more (most people eat meat, tho). I feel like it's kinda cultural here to not eat just beans and rice, doesn't feel like a full meal so I do like broccoli, cauliflower, pumpkin puree, soy protein or any other thing to go with it

Sharing my go to beans and rice meal just cause

  • Pan fried beans with curry/chili spices
  • White rice
  • Mango lime salsa
  • Fresh cucumbers and tomatoes

This is literally what many people in South America do all their lives. It rocks.

[–] dat_math@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I do this in North America

Can confirm: it rocks

probably one of the most adaptable dishes humanity has ever made, what doesn't go on beans'n'rice? (if someone says something sweet like ice cream or something american like twinkis, I'm launching you into the sun)

Hakarl, probably.

For a non-joke answer, I'd say cheese. I know cheese on rice is a thing in some places, but every time I've had it it's been very unpleasant, like the texture and flavor just clash so horribly. A jam would be weird too, and probably worse than just mixing in whatever fruit it was made from. Mashed potatoes would probably be a weird blend, and worse than mixing in chunks/sticks of fried potato.

I guess most of those are more like "if you prepare this blend of ingredients wrong it won't be good" than ingredients clashing, though, apart from the cheese one. So that's what I'm going with: cheese is not a good pairing with rice and beans.

I make frijoles charros (or a version with less/no meat), I just call em spicy beans, and enjoy them with cheese an corn chips.

Rice and beans standard dont need cheese, but cheese and beans are great
