This is likely to be an inaccurate and inflated figure. The methods used in this study have high false positive rates and there is some doubt as to its usefulness in detecting microplastics in the human body.

This twitter post discusses the paper in question and links to a paper critical of the methods used.

I wish I had something better to offer than posts on social media but heres another one that discusses the paper's findings.

title is confusing it's not a spoonful of plastic, it's enough microplastics to make a spoon, important distinction

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago

da brain spoon

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

Ill bet some folks have up to two spoons of plastic in their otherwise pristine skulls.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

Just a spoon full of plastic

in your fucking brain,

your fucking brain

your fucking brain

I'm not sure why they chose a spoon, but the article is saying that it's a plastic spoon worth of microplastics - not a spoonful, but the amount of plastic needed to make a plastic spoon. It's an extremely confusing measure, and a bit much for my plastic addled brain

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Anything but metric lol. Also that's definitely worse than just a spoonful.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

I think you'd be able to fit the plastic from a spoon in the bowl of a plastic spoon

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

i'm still confused, how many football fields is that?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 weeks ago

i think it's about 3 centiburgers by mass

Hey, look on the bright side! At least we never told porky or any of the Protagonists of Reality^TM^.....what to DO!

I'm legitimately concerned there's a threshold for too many microplastics in the environment and that once we pass it life will become unsustainable.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

maybe human life, but bacteria are already appearing that can digest various kinds of plastics if they cant find better food. nature is healing.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Imagine if that's all we ended up being in time. A brief flicker of immense plastic production and away into the dustbin of history.

Imagine all the people,
Leaving a common trace...

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

"Imagine," you say, like that's not the most likely possible outcome...

Truly the darkest timeline.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

"death cultists die en masse", most unexpected headline

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 weeks ago

I don't think ending life in earth is that easy, besides it would just incentive lifeforms that can break down plastic over time. It might become unsustainable for humanity however.

But for a glorious moment in time there were mountains of funko pops and wrappers for packages that contained 3 small cookies in landfills.

And lots of shareholder profits! Don't forget what's most important after all.
