I can't get over the lag the game has even on your own rented server while you're the only player on it; I can't imagine it would be better while actually playing with other people. Which is a shame, because it's just as fun as FO4 otherwise.

I get you. I would definitely play a Tale of Two Wastelands mod that combines Fallout 4 and 76.
Sounds like your connection is bad. I’ve never had any issues with lag before.
Not until I can self host my own server.
I play 76 all the time. I've been on and off it since beta.
I recommend joining the official discord group as well as AngryTurtle's discord group for friendly people to play with.
The game is in a really really good place right now. Lots of storylines, lots of endgame content, and the same great community the game has always had.
They are currently in the middle of a yearlong combat/perk rebalance with the next change (affecting all rifle/SMG/shotgun perks) due out in June.
Some quick tips when levelling:
-Always join a casual team when first connecting to a server. There is no expectation that you group up with the people on your team and you will receive an INT bonus.
-When levelling up you can pick a different special point than the perk, and you can change the special point later at Perk Stations.
-Endgame crafting is dependent on learning plans and legendary affects. Learn all the cheap/free plans you can and SCRAP all legendary weapons and armor until you start getting level 50 gear.
-Join public events! They reward a lot of XP, unique plans and recipes, reputation (Eviction Notice and Moonshine Jamboree). If you see the Scorched Earth event you can avoid radiation using a hazmat suit.
-One of the best power armors in the game, Excavator is availability to craft very early, follow any guide online to learn the storyline.
I love the Fallout universe, but came to it late so in contrast to the other poster, I love 3 but could never get into 1 or 2 (despite having played lots of BG2, Icewind Dale, etc). NV ofc I love too but I kind of got bored by 4 after a while, despite the shooting definitely being more enjoyable, it wasn't enough to save the story (or lack thereof)
A couple of years ago I picked up 76 on sale, and despite not being a MMO player I don't mind it as far as they go. Definitely echo your comments about the MMO part not being as blatant, and weirdly I've enjoyed base building more than in 4? But ultimately, I'm not sure whether through lack of time or change in my tastes, I find it hard to "stick" with 76 before I get bored and put it down. It's been a while though so it might be time for a reinstall...
